News in Brief reports sappers from the Viet Cong damaged and destroyed helicopters at Lai Khe base, 30 miles north of Saigon. Two American soldiers were wounded. no South Vietnamese casualties were reported.
Apollo 15 astronauts plan a one second main engine burn from the Hughes Houston facility to test landing viability. If ignition succeeds, Scott Irwin Worden proceed toward lunar landing. if not, an alternate orbit mission may be flown.
Ronnie Dale Hopper a 16 year old of Corning died after a .22 rifle fired by his 19 year old cousin during a crow hunting trip. The bullet entered his shoulder and lodged in a rib. Funeral arrangements are pending at Hall Brothers Chapel.
Nine men aged 15 to 24 appeared before Judge Curtiss E. Wetter in Tehama County Superior Court on marijuana and restricted drug charges. Several cases were continued, pleas were entered, and dates set for Aug. 2 through Aug. 10.
Corning officials move to file a federal grant for airport runway and taxiway upgrades and to add a six inch shoulder plus a parking apron. They also begin a city dump plan with Grimes Engineers to test a 300 acre site north of town for salvage use and potential operation by the landowner.
Tehama County livestock advisor Ken Ellis reports a Defense Department vaccine, previously cleared for Texas VEE use, can now be used in California as a precaution. He urges vaccination for Western Equine Encephalomyelitis and notes that early protection requires 7 to 10 days.

In Berkeley AP report Tehama County District Attorney Henry Goff Jr faces a misdemeanor trial for alleged driving while intoxicated on March 10. Prosecution witnesses say he failed two sobriety tests while the defense asserts he passed one test and did not drink enough to be intoxicated.
Two Red Bluff drivers blamed soft road shoulders for separate incidents reported to the California Highway Patrol. Carl Lloyd Olsen lost control on Live Oak Road drifting off the pavement into a fence and field. James Edward DiDio Sr. overturned a logging tractor trailer on Highway 36 west of Red Bluff. he was treated and released at St Elizabeth Hospital.
