AP dispatch reports Democratic leaders delay a $1.2 billion school finance reform as they push an 11th hour substitute plan backed by Gov. Reagan. The package would raise state taxes to fund a $545 million annual school boost, tax relief, and require local voter approval for future tax hikes.
The Tehama County Board of Supervisors kept its decision to withdraw from the Quad-County Community Action Agency unchanged despite pleas from two attorneys. They argued the Indian program within the CAA could offer cultural identity and aid to Native residents, but supervisors noted the federal funding criteria and potential future implications. A May 18 federal suit against the four counties challenges the decision to opt out of the Office of Equal Opportunity.
Tehama County Board of Supervisors delayed action on approving a sanitary trainee after controversy and rumor. Health officer Dr. Lynn Wolfe announced a trial 90 day arrangement for a northern county sanitarian, urging a waiting period before any letters on retention are sent.
The Agriculture Department reports a 0.9 percent jump in retail food prices in June, led by beef pork and fresh produce. Market basket cost for a family of four rose by 11 dollars year over year groceries. farm share 528 and middleman 771. Eggs fell, other items varied, beef at 1.135 per pound, pork 82 cents, lettuce 33.1 cents, tomatoes 54.7 cents.
Ronald Stephen Knight 41 of Visalia will become Tehama County Extension director and farm advisor. Knight replaces Kenneth W. Ellis who becomes UC Davis Extension Animal Scientist in September. Knight holds a UC Davis BS in Animal Husbandry 1954 and served as 4 H farm advisor in Solano and Tulare counties. He and his wife Janice and three children live in Red Bluff.
Telegrams streamed in from supporters urging or opposing Eagleton after his disclosure of psychiatric care and electric shock treatment. McGovern said he would wait and see while Eagleton refused to release medical records. The flap overlays McGovern’s Dakota retreat as he plans rest and faces a tough campaign turn.
The Red Bluff City Council approved a parcel map for the radar housing tract and a final subdivision map for the Cardinale Subdivision. The radar tract lies west of the city between Walnut Street and Reeds Creek, now with 16 homes sold to private owners. The Cardinale Subdivision sits southwest of town, west of Jackson Street and between Luther Road and Reeds Creek. The planning commission had recommended approval. Mayor Gene Penne and three council members participated. two council members were absent. Deeds for radar tract easements were not forwarded by the General Services Administration, which had administered the housing. The council authorized signing when ready and asked the city manager to check a proposed street name change from Acwron Drive in line with an Air Force designation. Next meeting is Aug. 1.
Divers armed with hammers attack sea urchins to revive a once lush underwater forest off Palos Verdes California. Urchins known as the pin cushions of the deep have stripped kelp forests by destroying their anchors. Volunteers have spent the past year destroying urchins to restore the habitat.
The Antelope School District tax override failed with 255 no votes to 163 yes votes. The 75 cent levy for three years would fund operating expenses and repay county borrowings to close year end accounts. About 24.6 percent of eligible voters cast ballots per the county clerk.
