County Tax Rate Tentatively Set At $3.37 Increase 66c

Tehama County plans a $3.37 per $100 general fund tax, up 66 cents. Auditor Jimmie Hinkle cites timber assessment cuts, lower state and federal aid in lieu of taxes, and higher contractor costs as factors. Telephone Strike In Second Day Minimal Effects

A strike of 400000 AFL CIO Communications Workers of America against Bell Telephone entered its second day with minimal public impact. Officials urged direct dialing and rectories, and Pacific Telephone executives warned limited long term disruption could occur if the stoppage lasts beyond a month. Union leaders expect at least two weeks of work stoppage.

Dog Island to be inaugurated by board in July ceremony

The wildlife project Dog Island will be accepted for public use in a ceremony Saturday July 24 at 10 a.m. Director John Suhr of Red Bluff parks and recreation coordinates preparations. Senator Fred Marler, board member, and Ray Nesbit and G Ray Arnett are to participate and ribbon cut.

Tehama County Drug Knowledge Questionnaire Planned

A six to twelve grade survey on marijuana and drug attitudes will be administered in Tehama County schools this fall. Don Hislop and Tracy Bennett lead seventh to twelfth grade testing with sixth graders by teachers. Results, due December or January, map problem areas and report to local officials.

Bruce opens useful dialogue at Paris peace talks

U S Ambassador David K E Bruce began what he called a useful dialogue with the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong at the Paris peace talks. He answered four questions from Mrs Nguyen Thi Binh and posed five of his own about her peace plan. Delegates said Bruce gave no concrete response to the seven point plan and raised several divorce questions.

Red Bluff High School board elects Dr. William Martin as president and Rev. J A Barber as clerk. The Red Bluff elementary schools board names Donald Webster president and Dr. Carl Grandona as clerk. Previous leaders were Robert Russell and Jack Burgess on the high school board and Jim Harris and Eleanor Pettinger on the elementary board.

Court Jury Values Commander-Owned Lot At 33000

A Tehama County superior court jury valued Commander Industries property at 33000 after a two day trial. The compromise fell between the county assessor's 28750 and Commander Industries' 40000 appraisal. The lot lies east of the Safeway at Oak and Madison Streets and was condemned after the county expanded land purchases.

Miss Tehama County pageant draws large field in 1971

Fourteen young women compete for Miss Tehama County 1971 title, the largest entry since 1967 though not a record. Secretary-manager H Richard Maguire notes 1967 had 15 contestants. most 1967 winner Lynda Robertson McLeod has roots in Red Bluff. Of the 14, all but two are Red Bluff residents. two come from Los Molinos and Corning with local chamber sponsorships.

Troop Deaths Rise Amid Vietnam War Toll

Allied commands report last week 29 American, 238 South Vietnamese, and 1,103 enemy combatant deaths. The U S toll includes 9 noncombatant American deaths and 179 wounded. South Vietnamese casualties total 514 wounded. Overall war toll reaches 45,373 Americans killed in action and 758,499 enemy killed.
