The U S Navy introduces a new one ton video bomb named Fat Albert, an improved Walleye variant, in air campaigns over North Vietnam. Capt Marland W Townsend of the carrier Kitty Hawk says initial six drops scored direct hits and lowered pilot risk.
Ground fighting intensifies around Quang Tri as 20 000 Saigon troops push to retake the province. Saigon reports 114 North Vietnamese killed with 41 weapons captured while Marines suffer casualties and Hue is hit by artillery and rockets.
An appeals committee upheld referee Lothar Schmid in awarding the game to Boris Spassky after Bobby Fischer failed to appear. Fischer trails 2 0 in the 24 game match needing 12 wins and a draw to reclaim the title. He remained in his hotel room as he opposed cameras planned for movie and TV sales.

The state Supreme Court rejected Pacific Telephone Co. claim to a $1.3 million overcharge rebate on 1960 taxes. The ruling cites 1967 tax laws limiting such tax questions. Earlier, the court ordered refunds of $143 million to customers from 1971 rate increases.
The Junior Round-Up Queens contest begins tomorrow with girls aged 8 to 14 vying for Junior Queen and ages 15 to 18 for Senior Queen. Violent thunderstorms with tornadoes and heavy hail struck the north central states late Thursday and today. A tornado touched down north of St. Cloud Minnesota damaging a barn and trees, and another was reported at Grenora North Dakota.
Senator George McGovern, introduced by Edward Kennedy, urged Democrats and all Americans to unite to win the White House, promising a people powered campaign. He spoke at Convent ion Hall after a late night nominating victory with running mate Thomas Eagleton, as party leaders debated DNC chair choices and unity with rivals.
Sen Thomas Eagleton appeared as front runner for McGovern's VP slot after Edward Kennedy declined and amid a day of talks. Reports named Moon Landrieu Reubin Askew and Abraham Ribicoff among possible choices as McGovern's staff weighed options.
The Paskenta post office, established Sept. 3, 1872, celebrates a century in its current Whitlock Store site and traces mail routes from stage coach days through a succession of postmasters led by Henry M. Elkins and later Frances M. Whitlock.
Alabama Governor George C. Wallace rejected current third party plans but did not rule out future runs. In Yonkers New York Courage party will circulate petitions to place Wallace on the presidential ballot while Wallace pressed at the Democratic National Convention for nomination.
