Statewide vote strike looms over California workers

Directors of the California State Employes Association authorize a statewide strike vote unless the legislature moves to grant pay raises for 183,000 state workers. Delegation rejected a Aug 1 deadline to act.

Reagan presses on with welfare reform plan on Senate floor

Governor Reagan seeks to revive his welfare reform bill in the California Senate with more than 40 amendments aimed at aligning it with his original proposal. Beilenson, the author, anticipates a floor vote soon as Democrats hold a 20 to 19 edge. Reagan warns rejection would be a tax increase on Californians and pledges county support while noting budget veto fights over welfare and Medi Cal items. Continued on Page 10.

Jets Streak Into North Vietnam Kill Antiaircraft Guns

Two U S Phantom jets crossed from Laos into North Vietnam and destroyed four antiaircraft guns near the Mu Gia pass 80 miles northwest of the DMZ, in the year’s largest reported such strike. A third Phantom was unharmed, and a photo-recon craft was hit but the pilots survived after bailing out near Saigon.

Bark Pile Fire Contained Near Vita Bark Plant

Tehama County Rural Fire Dept and Division of Forestry crews dampened the last remains of a bark pile fire at the Vita Bark plant in Red Bluff. USFS crews from Red Bluff battled a small blaze in Panther Springs near Paynes Creek, confined to a tenth of an acre. Fire conditions in the county are expected to be high tomorrow.

Ringleaders Executed In Rabat Morocco

In Rabat the ringleaders of the coup attempt against King Hassan II were executed by firing squad after a summary court martial. King Hassan named eight principal plotters including generals and colonels. Mohamed Medbouh, head of the king’s staff, was killed by his own troops during the attack on the summer palace.

Proposal For Radar Base Use In Tehama County

Tehama County supervisors will review tomorrow a plan to open a minimum security prison at the former Air Force radar base west of Red Bluff. The proposal arose at a Friday meeting of CCCJ member counties in Redding with Shasta Modoc Trinity and Siskiyou present.

Large entries alter schedule for Tehama County 4-H horse events with showmanship for 9 10 year olds set for 10 30 am Friday July 23 in the arena. Weekend Accidents On Route 36 In Mountainous California

Four separate weekend crashes occurred on State Route 36 in mountainous areas reported by the California Highway Patrol. No injuries were reported. At 9:55 am Friday near Plumas County, Raymond Vargas struck a crossing deer. one deer died. Friday evening near the Plumas County line, Wayman Schmidt was sideswiped by a truck and trailer driven by Thomas Glenn, causing major camper damage. Early Sunday, Bobby Ware could not avoid a deer near Dale's Station. his car overturned with major damage. Sunday evening, Wesley Trengove struck a crossing calf. minor car damage.
