Rep Paul N McCloskey Jr the outspoken Nixon war critic announces his candidacy for the 1972 California presidential primary pledging to end the war conditioned on the return of POWs. He says the campaign will address more than one issue.
U S officials consider a shift in the Paris peace talks as Vietnamese leaders now demand removal of President Nguyen Van Thieu from any future Saigon government. The move follows Madame Binh and Le Duc Tho backing Thieu’s ouster in new peace terms, with U S influence cited as decisive for elections.
Clifford Steenburgen of Los Molinos won the grand prize in the Fourth of July parade for a four wheel buggy drawn by a Clydesdale mare. His other entry a pony cart driven by a child also topped its division. Los Molinos Grange 471 won the float sweepstakes as divisions list Tehama Lions and other groups.
In Londonderry troops clashed with Roman Catholic crowds in the Bogside, firing on rioters and killing two men with a third wounded. Spectators cheered as youths hurled gasoline bombs bricks and bottles, while the mob fired first at soldiers during the prelude to the 12th of July celebrations.
An overnight quake in central Chile left 63 dead and 461 injured across the country. Valparaiso reported heavy damage with 25 dead and about 300 injured while many areas remained cut off by landslides. Seismographs showed force near 7 to 10 on the Richter scale.
Dr. Paul W. McCracken told Congress the Nixon administration abandoned its $1.065 trillion GNP growth target for 1971 to curb inflation. He warned pushing to that target could revive inflation and delay abatement. The administration cites inflationary risk and the 1965 to 1968 era as reasons for restraint.
Tehama County deputies probe thefts including about 100 dollars from the Hudson Oil Co safe at Antelope gas station, plus a 75 dollar pump stolen from Corning Road near I-5. Red Bluff police also investigate theft of a gray sedan from Bidwell Field.
Vice President Spiro Agnew drew a crowd of more than 600 of the 3,000 Americans in Jidda at the U S Embassy. He said the greeting showed the Nixon administration could provide leadership to be followed with enthusiasm and he then mingled with the crowd signing autographs.
A Daily News report misidentified Richfield broker A Wayne Perry as a realtor in a suit filed by W P and Euelah Pittsenbarger. Richard Dopkins, president, stated only officially affiliated members may use the Realtor title with Tehama County Board of Realtors California Real Estate Board and National Association of Realtors cited.
Red Bluff airport commissioners prepare to reorganize under a new ordinance requiring pilots licenses. The board meets Monday at 5 pm in City Hall to hear June activities, discuss erectional signs, and consider Glenn Miller’s plan for an industrial park at Bidwell Field.
Tehama County Employees Association warns the board of supervisors against renegotiating a binding pay deal. A large turnout of 86 members filled the supervisors chambers for a special Directors meeting to review the dispute and potential alternatives discussed by President Glenn Neilson.
The Labor Department reported a 0.4 percent rise in the wholesale price index for June, unchanged from May on a seasonally adjusted basis. The smaller rise supports the Nixon administration's claim that inflation is slackening as inflationary pressures ease.
Lassen View volunteer firemen extinguished a small grass fire yesterday on Highway 99E near Oklahoma Ave. No injuries or property damage reported. Fire officials said the blaze was quickly contained and under control within minutes.
