Red Bluff hosts a Lake Red Bluff Regatta raft race and boat events at Red Bluff River Park with art exhibits and a band concert. Corning Jaycees run all day activities at County River Park Woodson Bridge with fireworks. Los MolinosK parade starts at 10 a.m. with games and booths at the park and a fireworks display after dark. Dr Harold T Edwards wins honorary mayor. $550 raised.

Fourth of July Highlights Feature Stars and Mantle

The nation celebrates its 196th birthday with fireworks parades and picnics over a four day weekend. In Oklahoma City a Stars and Stripes Show with Bob Hope Anita Bryant Nancy Wilson and Mickey Mantle drew an audience in red white and blue. Tickets to the $300 000 extravaganza were free but require flag colors. NBC taped the show for a Tuesday broadcast.

Reagan Hopes European Trip Improves US Relations

Gov. Ronald Reagan departs Los Angeles with wife Nancy and son Skipper on a seven nation tour at Nixon's request. He aims to deepen European understanding of United States policy through substantive talks in Copenhagen Brussels Paris Madrid Rome London and Dublin. He declines to discuss a prior one hour briefing with Henry Kissinger.

Weather Outlook Mixed Warm Days Through Tuesday

Forecast shows fair weather through Tuesday with a slight warmup on Tuesday. Today's high 97 and tonight's low 65, with a high of 102 tomorrow. River readings include Bend Bridge 21.9, Lake Red Bluff 15.7, Woodson Bridge 169.2 feet above sea leaves. The dry season ends June 30, the driest since 1872.

Ten Fires In Tehama County Over The Weekend

The Division of Forestry reported ten fires in Tehama County over the weekend amid dry conditions. Fires included a grain field blaze on Newville Road, grass fires sparked by fireworks on Highway 99W and Lolita Street Corning, and a 50 acre grain fire near Orland. Damages totaled at least 1,534 dollars with several blazes under investigation.

Supervisors Asked to Join Emergency Medical System

Andy Ward, chairman of the Emergency Medical Care Committee, will present a resolution to the Tehama County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday requesting the county join a federally funded area-wide emergency communications system. The meeting starts at 9 a.m. in the courthouse board chambers.

Boat motor and equipment stolen from boat at Black Butte Lake

John H. Holles of Chico reported to the local Sheriff's Office that a boat motor and water equipment were stolen from his vessel. The boat sank at Black Butte Lake sometime Saturday night or Sunday morning, leaving the location and timing uncertain.

Tehama Council Mulls 60 Day Delay To Demolish Mint Tavern

Tehama city council plans a Wednesday meeting to consider extending by 60 to 90 days the deadline to remove the former Mint Tavern. Owners Tom and Lelia Beers of Chico request more time via letter to City Clerk Carolyn Steffan. The building now hazards public safety.

Attack Pressed To Recapture Quang Tri City

South Vietnamese marines supported by US air power pressed toward Quang Tri City as North Vietnamese forces fled in small groups. B52 bombers worked ahead of the drive, while anti personnel cluster bombs struck in support. casualties and losses were reported on both sides.

Fresh Water Moved To Canal In San Joaquin Delta Fix

East Bay Municipal Utility District crews worked over the weekend to move fresh water from the Mokelumne River into the Contra Costa Canal. Officials said canal water is salty but safe to drink except for those on salt free diets. The move follows a levee break that raised salinity in supplies serving about 70 000 people in seven cities, with canal salinity at 370 parts per million on Sunday.

Lincoln Street School Sale Delayed by Tehama Co Board

Tehama County Board of Supervisors delays final payment for Lincoln Street School purchase from Red Bluff elementary system. County paid $30,000 down of $300,000 total after engineers deemed the building unsafe under the Field Act. A special Red Bluff board meeting set for Wednesday at 8 p.m. to discuss the sale.

Hijack attempt foiled over Vietnam bound Pan Am jet

A Vietnamese man attempting to hijack a Pan American jumbo with 153 aboard to Hanoi was overpowered by the pilot and killed by an armed passenger after the plane landed in Saigon. He had studied fishery science in Seattle on a U.S. government scholarship and carried a South Vietnamese passport in the name Nguyen Thai Binh.
