Marines land in biggest seaborne assault since Korea
Two battalions of U S Marines stormed ashore on the Batangan Peninsula northeast of Saigon as part of an 8 200 man allied force to crush a Viet Cong sanctuary. In the opening phase 56 Marines were killed and 150 wounded while enemy dead reached about 560. The operation aims to surround a roughly eight square mile area believed to hold up to 800 North Vietnamese soldiers and guerrillas as pacification plans for the 5 000 to 10 000 peninsula residents proceed slowly.
