Viet Cong Blows Up 15 U.S. Helicopters in Mekong Delta

Viet Cong attacked Can Tho airfield 80 miles south of Saigon, destroying 15 helicopters valued at about 5 million dollars and damaging six more in a mortar assault. Eight Americans were killed and ten wounded. The raid targeted the 164th Aviation Group and the Dong Tam headquarters, with U.S. retaliatory fire killing four Viet Cong as security repelled the attackers.

Plucky Stewardess Foils Delta Jet Hijack Attempt

MIAMI AP An attempted hijacking of a Delta jet from Detroit to Miami was stopped when a stewardess ignored a passenger shotgun and slammed the cabin door. Kenneth Earl McPeek, 31, of Orchard Lake, Michigan, was arrested on landing at Miami International Airport. His 3-year-old son was placed in protective custody. The shotgun was found under his seat in a duffel bag.

Drive-In Drug Arrest at Tehama County Sheriff’s Office

A Greyhound passenger from San Francisco, Charles Byron MacIntyre, 28, was arrested after a sheriff’s drive-in service. He allegedly carried a capsule of a hallucinogenic drug he claimed was an ancient Chinese herb. The deputy noted MacIntyre appeared under the influence during arrest. Investigation into an aggravated child molesting case near Bidwell housing and Reeds Creek continues, with an FBI composite drawing published yesterday.

Man Reports Theft Finds Recovered Tools in Alley

Angelo Mendonca of Red Bluff reported about 200 dollars in tools stolen from his pickup and found part of the contraband already turned in. The tools were in a locked carpenter’s box whose lock was broken. Police also logged two more weekend thefts including a motorcycle engine and drive chain and a stereo tape deck with seven tapes from a parked car.

Auxiliary Police Force Suspended for Training in Redding

Redding Chief George Vanderpool halted the auxiliary police, a group of local businessmen, after a meeting with City Manager Robert Cowden. The force will remain suspended until member training improves, amid statewide criticism labeling it vigilante. Training recommendations to Council are due January 27.
