Britain Trade Treaty Provokes State Tax Officials

Washington AP The treaty would ban state auditors from considering foreign subsidiaries in tax calculations. Georgia revenue commissioner W C Strickland says multinationals could dodge state taxes by shifting profits overseas. Signatories from 12 states warn of federal cave-in while Calif Oregon and Alaska fear a $150 million annual hit.

Colby Denies CIA Influence Over News Reporters

Former CIA Director William E. Colby testified before the House Intelligence Committee that CIA agents who served as journalists did not receive writing direction from the agency. He noted that while some isolated cases may have diverged, the aim was for reporters to edit and their editors to decide, not for Colby to approve their reports. He warned that cover options for agents are shrinking as many avenues are disallowed.

Traffic Copter Crashes In Quincy Killing Two

A radio station traffic helicopter attempting an emergency landing plowed into a three story brick building in Quincy, exploded, killing two people and injuring four. Fire swept the second floor. two bodies burned beyond recognition were found near the wreckage. On board were Henry Whitmore, 29, Boston reporter for WEEI, and pilot Richard Banks, 40, Marlboro.

Rain Brings Drought Relief In California

Rain and snow sweep from the far North to San Diego easing the drought. Precipitation this winter is above normal at many points with Sierra snow and state-wide rains boosting depleted reservoirs though water rationing remains. Dam storage shows only partial recovery, and forecasted storms keep hope alive into coming weeks.

Hillside Strangler Investigators Face Agency Disputes

Los Angeles detectives tracking the Hillside Strangler report dead-end clues and false confessions while interagency disputes flare over the dump sites of 11 nude female victims in northern suburbs. Additional bodies include a seven year old girl and two women found in nearby areas, fueling tensions among county and city police.
