Several boxcars loaded with ammunition and possibly bombs exploded in Roseville California causing families to flee as giant mushroom clouds rose. An ambulance service reported injuries and a railroad spokesman cited the rail yards as a major junction.
The Anderson quintuplets, five preterm babies born two minutes apart in Portland, face a guarded prognosis with medical teams forecasting 60 to 80 days in hospital. Parents Karen and Eric Anderson celebrate on her birthday amid prior miscarriages and fertility challenges.
Rebels captured four towns within ten miles of Phnom Penh as U S bombing along the Mekong east bank was halted. B 52 raids resumed later with heavy strikes southeast of the capital while refugees report homes burned at Prek Thong.
Nicholas M. Peck III of Santa Rosa is jailed in connection with the killing of Manuel Richard Salado 19 and his wife Mary Ellen Dallas 18 in Glendale Phoenix area. Peck allegedly drove away in the victim’s 1972 station wagon after a confrontation over borrowing the car. Graveside services for Salado and Dallas were planned at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Corning with Hall Brothers Mortuary handling arrangements.
Tonight a dance at the Community Hall opens the Paskenta Pioneer Days festivities. Tomorrow features an 11 o clock parade, a noon picnic at Simpson Funnel Park, plus an afternoon horse show and horseback games.
An Applegate man, Jeff Edward Root, 28, died when his car was struck by a Southern Pacific train at Colusa Avenue in Corning at 5 a.m. The car was pushed 1500 feet past Tehama Street. Root's German Shepherd also died in the crash.
Douglas Freitas appeared in Tehama County Superior Court on drug charges. Court records show three counts: possession of a narcotic possession of a narcotic for sale and possession of marijuana. The case has been continued.

The California Fish and Game Commission proposed 1973 74 hunting rules to end the early deer season a week earlier with a Sept 16 close, boost quail bag limits in Southern California, add Trinity County to the two back area, expand bear season open area to four south counties and part of a fifth, and remove pig hunting limits in Monterey County where a closed season existed. A final hearing in Sacramento May 25 is expected to approve changes.
