Protestant youths rioted through the night in Belfast attacking police and burning cars after snipers in a speeding car wounded two teenage Protestants. Police dispersed the mobs by 4 a.m. Three officers were injured and three rioters arrested.
Sam Baggett, 24, was found unconscious in his car south of Corning near the J and W Cafe on Highway 99 West by a fellow employee. He was taken to Corning Memorial Hospital with a faint pulse rate and is listed in satisfactory condition. An investigation is underway.
In Sacramento AP says drought year strike looms as workers demand 1.2 million in pay hikes. The California State Employer Association reports 87 percent of over 600 workers voted to strike unless Governor Reagan meets the pay rise demands.
After Edmund Muskie left the race George McGovern secures new support from Sen. Fred Harris Iowa Democratic chair Cliff Larson and Sen. Abraham Ribicoff sources say Ribicoff would endorse McGovern. The shift leaves Humphrey facing McGovern as the Democratic field narrows.
Fair conditions persist through Saturday as cooler northerly winds 15 to 30 mph bring an unseasonably mild day. Highs reach 72 with a low 44. no precipitation is expected. River levels list Bend Bridge at 20.5 feet and nearby gauges at Woodson and Tehama Bridges, with sunsets at 7 01 p.m. and sunrise at 5 22 a.m. PST.
