Gov. Reagan accused Assembly Democrats of masking a 500 million dollar tax increase in a major tax reform bill. An author of the bill called Reagan's charge ridiculous. Reagan spoke to California State Employee Association officials, warning that the plan hides a tax rise.
The Red Bluff Chamber of Commerce notes about 125 entries for Saturdays parade along Pine and Main Streets. Four queens and six candidates join 13 floats and five bands in a nine block route ending near Elm and Washington Streets. Parade grand marshal Bill Whitt rides a 1918 fire engine. Colleen Bloxham, 1971 queen, rides with runners up and Tehama County royalty.
Thousands of South Vietnamese troops push a counter-offensive against North Vietnamese forces in the central highlands. Reports note ongoing NVA offensives around Fire Base 6 and Tan Canh, with U.S. advisers suffering casualties amid heavy fighting and large enemy losses on both sides.
North Vietnam declares the United States can end the Indochina war quickly and honorably by accepting Hanoi's peace terms. Negotiator Xuan Thuy resumes talks after a six week boycott and warns of inevitable defeat if Nixon administration rejects the terms. Jannette Graham, 32, of Manton escaped serious injury when her car overturned twice after she swerved to avoid a deer on Manton Road near Powerhouse Road. She sought her own medical aid.
Bob Ashworth a diesel mechanic runs as a write-in for the Evergreen Union elementary school board. He cites interest in scholastic achievement and boosting community involvement. Ashworth of Bowman Road has a son in the district and a daughter who graduated, his first at tempt for a school board vacancy.
The California Fish and Game Department will host a hunter safety school starting Monday April 19 and the following Friday at 6 30 p m. It will be held at the Episcopalian Parish Hall on Elm Street at Jefferson with registration at the Army Navy store. Forty five students will enroll on a first come basis and youngsters should not bring parents to sign up.
