In early returns from Sunday’s municipal vote, Allende's Popular Unity coalition leads in 280 municipalities with 871,724 votes or 48.45 percent, up from 36.3 percent in the September presidential contest. The result signals a significant leftist gain.

Bills totaling 375 for physicians standby fees go before Tehama County supervisors. Dr. Milford presented a 50 dollar claim for 16 hours from March 24 to March 25. Garland Flynn Rodgers, 58, a longtime Corning resident, died at Enloe Memorial Hospital Chico from a gunshot wound to the head. Found slumped in his car on Edith Avenue by the California Highway Patrol, he was a Southern Pacific Railroad employee and Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen member. He was born April 10, 1912 in Arnett Oklahoma and survived by a son, Rob, and three brothers. Private funeral services are planned with burial at Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Washington AP Curtis Tarr says men with Random Sequence Numbers up to 125 may be drafted to meet May call of 15 000. Local boards may order pre induction physicals for numbers to 175 while ceiling previously was 150. May total for 1971 is 83 000 after 17 000 monthly targets earlier.

A bulldozer uncovering an ancient cemetery outside Jerusalem revealed 35 human remains in nine tombs dating to the first century. One ossuary held a crucified man named Jehohanan with a 7 inch iron nail through the heel bones. The find provides the first definite physical evidence of crucifixion in the New Testament era, though not identifying Jesus. Researchers note crucifixion was common in that era and the site predates 66 A.D.
About a thousand people gathered north of Red Bluff for Tehama County Cattlemen's spring field day at the Jelly Ranch.
