In London on March 17 suffragettes attempting a Sunday meeting in Hyde Park were mobbed by about 10,000 people. The crowd used mud and abuse as the suffragette leader Flora Drummond was pelted while trying to speak, and two hours of disorder followed in the park vicinity.
Washington dispatch notes that unless Illinois lawmakers elect two U S senators within two weeks the state risks losing its voting power. It states 31 of 36 states have ratified the direct election amendment and four others have one legislative chamber acting favorably.
Uncle Joe, a private citizen living in Washington, left yesterday for his home in Danville Illinois marking his first departure from public life in nearly forty years and ending a long period away from the national stage.
In New York on March 17 J. J. Hartigan a patrolman was found guilty of perjury in the District Attorney's graft probe against police officials. Hartigan acted as an agent for bribe witnesses to leave the state, marking the first conviction in the case.
Fort Worth area forecast shows generally fair skies tonight and Tuesday with warmer temperatures. Denton and vicinity expect continued pleasant conditions and rising highs.
Exchange National Bank announces its officers and directors including A. J. Nance as President J. R. Christal as Vice President J. C. Coit as Cashier E. D. Curtis as Assistant Cashier with board members J. H. Paine Ed F. Bates Dr. J. M. Inge and A. C. Owsley.
The Texas Legislature adjourned for Saint Patrick's Day after adopting a resolution to adjourn in respect to the holiday. A substitute for the Hunter resolution to increase Supreme Court justices was adopted but the bill was left for later action. Gov Colquitt approved a bill allowing towns over 500 population to adopt the commission form of government. Texas lawmakers plan to work until April 1 at two dollars a day with an extra session possible.
The Supreme Court granted a temporary order restraining Postmaster General Burleson from enforcing the newspaper publicity law until a ruling on its constitutionality. The action centers on the legality of government oversight of newspaper publicity.
Rev M E Hudson of College Avenue Baptist Fort Worth declines the call to become pastor of the First Baptist church here to succeed Rev B A Copass who resigned.
Washington dispatch reports the Weather Bureau predicts low temperatures and frost Monday and Tuesday across the Northern states east of the Rockies. After the frost, the outlook turns to fair weather for the rest of the week.
President Wilson issued a call for an extra session of Congress starting April 7. The notice cites public interest as the reason, with tariff revision anticipated as the principal item for consideration.
President Wilson telegraphed Democratic Leader Davis of New Jersey the state Senate and Gov. Fielder urging swift passage of the pending jury reform bill without amendment. United States Senate adjourned sine die today. Secretary McAdoo says he will not receive more personal applications from office seekers and requests written submissions only.
Police report a tunnel escape from the Martin Simon & Sons pawn shop in Manhattan. Suspects fled with diamonds valued at 590 000 after bypassing alarms. a witness saw a man emerge from a basement and a second man arrive in a light wagon with lamps and a parcel believed to hold the gems.
Local orchardists and nurserymen presented divergent views on fruit damage after the Sunday freeze. R. H. Hoffman described substantial damage but expected a fair overall crop if conditions stay favorable, noting the Elberta variety suffered most. John L. Foster believed only some buds frozen while many remained unhurt. S. A. Bayless cautioned he would not commit until Tuesday as warm weather would reveal results, also noting this year's crop would be light due to last year's bumper yield.
March 17. Paul Re tentour a German barber recently from Dallas was killed by Annie Ridge a negro woman here Sunday. W Wichart a marble cutter who went to the woman's home for laundry was shot in the neck but not seriously injured. The woman said she had known Re tentour for two years in Dallas and Kansas City.
About 200 Carrancistas attacked federal forces in Nueva Laredo. In a savage engagement lasting an hour and a half, roughly 20 rebels and 15 federales were killed before rebels withdrew.
In Nuevo Laredo a daylong battle left twenty Carrancistas and fifteen Federals dead with about fifty wounded. Rebels attacked from the south and opened a fierce fight near the Rio Grande, then retreated toward the hills as Federal forces repelled them. American doctors assisted the wounded.
Federal troops captured twenty two Zapatistas near Pueblo Mexico and shot them without a trial as reported yesterday setting a harsh tone in the border district.
The Sixteenth District Court began its fourth week of the February term with a full docket of jurors witnesses and litigants. In Myers vs Prickard & Sanders the suit for specific performance of contract shifted to damages after amendments while a jury was selected. Several orders were entered including continuances and overrulings of exceptions in related cases.
In J. C. Bateman v. Paul J. Knight et al. a partition judgment is granted with W. C. Orr appointed receiver to sell land not suited for division. Injunction granted in Nancy Ball v. S S and J A Ball restrains interference with homestead use, crop, and delivery of property and funds. final hearing not yet set. New suit filed Nancy Ball v. S S and J A Ball for injunction.
