Associated Press reports the French submarine Vendemiaire was torn in two after a collision with the battleship St Louis between Alderney and Cap Hastings. Seventy six crew are feared drowned as the submarine surfaced suddenly and vanished beneath the water in a fatal encounter.
The Ways and Means Committee reported it approved Senate amendments to the metal tariff bill covering perron and chromium rates but refused to repeal Canadian reciprocity or the universal two dollar per ton duty on print paper. It called repeal a subterfuge to defeat the bill.
