Terrifying attitude of hawk-eyed moth observed by birds
The hawk-eyed moth hides its eye spots and red wing areas during the day to resemble dried willow leaves. When disturbed it shows a terrifying attitude with arched thorax and protruding front, possibly signaling danger. Experiments by Standfuss with several birds showed four of five fled from the moth after glimpsing the threat.
