Senate foreign relations committee will attack certain American interests alleged to be involved in Mexican revolutionary activities. Senator Smith of Michigan predicted the special committee report during the hearing in Washington.
In Mexico City on Aug 13 Minister Gamboa met with the American representative John Lind. Advices from the capital are reassuring and suggest the crisis may ease, though pacification of Constitutionalists and other rebel factions remains uncertain.
City of Mexico dispatches say 3,200 rebels were slain in the Torreon battle as the siege ended. Reports indicate many killed were executed, marking a dramatic conclusion to the rebel stronghold.
President Wilson says it is inadvisable to incorporate rural credit provisions and urges postponing that feature until the December session.
In Washington on August 413 President Wilson spoke before the House Democratic caucus. He said it would be inadvisable to amend the currency bill now to include rural credit provisions. Representative Eagle of Texas and others favor the amendments and the president suggested postponing them to the December session when the government commission abroad would report.
Washington August 13 The Superintendent of Police Sylvester tested presidential security by attempting entry to the White House as an intruder before daylight. He was caught and briefly arrested until he identified himself, then released.
Henry R. Towne of New York testified before the Senate lobby committee that former Representative James E. Watson of Montana worked for the National Tariff Association after leaving Congress earning 250 dollars weekly. The association is linked to the National Manufacturers' Association.
The New York House voted 79 to 45 for impeachment after a night of sparring as lawmakers awaited the return of absent members. The declaration of Mrs Sulzer failed to pass, ending a tense session at 5 16 Wednesday morning.
The New York Assembly impeached Governor William Sulzer by a 79 to 45 vote at 5:16 AM after hours of delay and a late plea from his wife amid the campaign contribution controversy. Bills vetoed by Sulzer were quickly passed once impeachment concluded. Adjournment followed at 7:30.
In Washington on August 13 Senator Saulsbury introduced a Senate bill to hike the vice president's pay from eight thousand twelve hundred to twenty five thousand dollars.
The senate calls on the governor to submit Bra. Han and Tittle along with the Cabells Penitentiary bill, which has passed and is sent to conference for a contest hearing.
The Texas Senate requested Governor Golquitt submit confirmations for Brahan Tittle and B. E. Cabell, aligning with the Governor over the Attorney General. The Wheeler-Oliver contest hearing is set for 4 PM. The penitentiary bill and eleemosynary appropriations bill both passed finally and moved to conference.
Austin August 13 The House adopted a resolution for its conferees to demand an extra 2500 appropriation for the Attorney General's department to prepare the state's case against the Houston Oil Company to recover 80000 acres of school lands.
In Austin the Senate debated confirmation of Ben E. Cabell as Penitentiary commissioner and J. S. Williams for the A and M college board. Williams failed to secure two thirds but vote was reconsidered after a member changed his stance. New bills included Webb law extension to interstate liquor shipments and penalties for violations, plus compulsory education and colonization provisions. House conferees on education and departmental appropriations were named Wortham Goodner Hill Kirby and Woods of Navarro.
The Baraca and Philathea classes of the First Baptist church will meet at the Sunday school annex Thursday evening and proceed to Club Lake for a moonlight picnic. A big supper will be served on the grounds and a pleasant time is anticipated.
Governor ONeal appoints Congressman H D Clayton of Montgomery to fill the unexpired Alabama Senate term despite Washington advice that he cannot be seated. Senator Overman doubts Clayton's seating citing the Seventeenth Amendment requires state legislative action.
Judge Hawkins issued a restraining order against canvassing the returns and declared the Ellis county pool hall local option election result unconstitutional. The recent vote showed a 3 to 1 majority against pool halls.
State Superintendent Bralley will replace Dr. A Caswell Ellis as head of the University Extension department. Ellis will move to a post in the University Department of Education.
In Dallas on August 13 Marie J. Cole of Dallas was elected Grand Protector of the Texas Knights and Ladies of Honor. Joseph Netzer of Laredo was elected vice grand protector.
In a mass meeting at Terrell on the 13th Wills Point and nearby towns pledged 180000 dollars for a railroad from here to Tyler. The funds are to finance construction through Terrell and surrounding communities along the proposed route.
Zurich August 13. August Ferdinand Bebel a renowned German socialist leader died here today at the age of 73. His death marks a major moment for European socialism and he was widely regarded as a prominent figure in the movement. Bebel had long been a central voice in German and international labor politics.
Dallas officers admit no clue to the identity of Florence Brown's murderer as of August 13.
In Garza County on August 13 an experiment using 4,500 pounds of dynamite to induce rain exploded without producing rain. The blast occurred as workers carried out the charge to trigger precipitation. No injuries were reported and the team will review the test results.
County Judge Hoskins and County Attorney Wilson contend the new lunacy statute violates the constitution by removing jury trials. The law substitutes a six person commission of physicians and laymen, increasing trial costs from favors to the county and defendant.
