AP reports Nagashima Japan a town of 7000 drowned by Typhoon Vera. Bodies drift in muddy flood waters while 1710 dead nationwide and 1980 missing. Rescue crews struggle four days to reach isolated patches as survivors go days without food.
Paris AP reports prospects for an early end to the Algerian rebellion remain bleak. A rebel offer to meet De Gaulle drew no response, while the rebel government signaled willingness to discuss ceasefire terms and self determination for Algeria’s nine million Muslims. Observers doubt De Gaulle will accept their proposal, foreseeing continued fighting or stalemate.
Herbert Banks of Beckley waived preliminary hearing today before Magistrate Cotton White and is held for Grand Jury action on a felonious assault charge. He is in Raleigh County Jail on a 500 dollar bond after an arrest Sept 22. Banks also faced a breach of peace charge and was jailed after failing to post a six month bond. Rex Scurlock of Beckley was jailed on an assault and battery charge at 11 pm Monday by city police.
President Eisenhower plans an eight day visit to southern California staying at La Quinta near Palm Springs. He travels with a cold, hosted by George E. Allen, a Washington businessman and golfer who shares ties with the president from Gettysburg. Hagerty says he aims to depart late Wednesday afternoon by jet to Palm Springs airport.
John Pavlick 69 of Bob died at 3 a m today after a several weeks illness in a local hospital. Born in Hungary, he worked for Raleigh Wyoming Mining Co Glen Rogers and was a United Mine Workers Local 6004 member. Survived by three sons David John Aleck Detroit and Cleveland daughter Mrs Emil Ondrechen and eight grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home.
Charles B Criddle of Beckley was arrested after his vehicle failed to stay in control and struck George Ned Stone of Portsmouth Virginia from behind at Piney View beyond the Dunbar Clinic. Damages were estimated at 450 dollars.
Hurricane Gracie battered Charleston SC and surrounding coast with 125 mph winds and 11 foot tides. High water flooded streets, toppled trees, tore roofs, and disabled docks. An unidentified motorist died when his car overturned west of Beaufort. Hannah hurricane remains southeast of Bermuda with 85 mph winds.
Washington officials said the Justice Department prepares for swift action if President Eisenhower invokes Taft Hartley emergency provisions to halt the 77 day steel strike. A fact finding panel could precede a possible 80 day cooling injunction while talks remain at a standstill.
Funeral services for Minnie MacKenzie, former Eccles resident, will be held Thursday at 10 a m at Sacred Heart Church Princeton with the Priests Choir and Monsignor J B O Riley delivering the sermon. She died Monday at 6 30 p m at the home of her nephew Michael Flanigan 208 Eighth St Princeton after a period of illness. Born January 20 1876 in Londres Nova Scotia she moved to Raleigh County fifty four years ago and later to Princeton. Surviving are two sisters Katherine MacKenzie Boston and Mrs Henry Brooks Lourdes along with seven nieces four nephews and many grandnieces and grandnephews. Loyalty Month set for October observed in Sunday School and Worship Service at the First Christian Church. A committee meeting Monday planned four special services, one for each Sunday. Planning committee includes Rev. A. H. Wilson chairman Carroll Hutchinson Kyle Phipps Grover St. Clair Miss Juanita Baldwin Robert Burnam and Mrs W R Henkle.

Harvit and daughter Rita Louise for 10,000, while Mrs. Seuss seeks 20,000 for personal injuries and car damage.
An unauthorized day shift taxi strike affecting White Star Radio and Yellow Cab drivers in Beckley ended after discussions. Fourteen drivers quit at 1 pm, then returned and a contract with the union was pledged through January. The dispute involved routing and grievance channels, with drivers and managers now operating under established procedures.

Circuit Judge Norman Knapp signed two final decrees of divorce. Betty Joe Meador was granted a divorce from Herbert O. Mead with custody of two children to the mother. Bobby Jo Hammock was granted a divorce from Rosetta Gail Hammock with custody of two children awarded to the father.
