Court urged to move embezzlement trial venue for Riley case
The West Virginia Supreme Court heard that Wirt County Circuit Court erred by not granting a change of venue for former Wirt County School Superintendent Raymond F. Riley's embezzlement trial. Riley, jailed 1 to 10 years for purloining 1392 dollars from the county board of education, argued local publicity made a fair trial unlikely. The state asserted venue decisions lie to the trial judge and challenged Riley’s claims of crime location and guilt.

The Public Land Corporation rejected a request to dredge seven miles of the Guyan River from Sheridan to Rock in Lincoln County, citing potential harm to fishing value. G Thomas Kerwood of West Hamlin sought to amend a 1985 dredging contract, but resources officials argued against actions conflicting with water quality improvements under federal law.
