Yemen Radio reports a revolutionary army has overthrown the monarchy and proclaimed a free republic. An unnamed Arab broadcast claimed the 36 year old Imam king was assassinated after Seif El Islam El Badr seized the throne a week earlier following his father’s death.
Radio reports say a revolt erupted in Yemen around 5 p.m. on Wednesday. A curfew was announced with orders to shoot anyone leaving after hours. Unclear if Imam remains in Sanaa or at Taiz palace where the late Imam died last week, with Taiz possibly joining the revolution. Kremlin interest and Yemen's strategic Red Sea position noted as Aden base lies 50 miles away.

STOCKHOLM (UPI) The Soviet Union detonated a 32 megaton nuclear weapon in the atmosphere near Novaya Zemlya, according to the Stockholm Institute of Geodesy. The blast occurred at 4:03 a.m. EDT, about 43 miles south of Tuesday’s 30 megaton event, marking the 14th explosion in the current series and described as slightly more powerful yet an exact copy of the previous blast.
Washington UPI Deputy Defense Secretary Roswell L. Gilpatric announced the Army will raise its anti guerrilla commando type forces from 5300 to 6650 men over the next five years. The Army's special forces have already more than doubled since January 1961.
New Kanawha Industrial Corp in Oak Hill nears final packaging of rocket tube containers for the U S Army Chemical Corps. A deco rating oven for Charm Lamp of NRIC is being unloaded at Mount Hope with operations expected by mid November. Production aims for 126000 units under an August 1963 completion, with monthly shipments about 179000 dollars and 35 workers at peak. Western Allies plan to protest Moscow directly after a Soviet fighter nearly collided with a Pan American Clipper carrying 84 passengers bound for Berlin. In the preceding two days Soviet jets buzzed a U S C 47 and an Air France airliner in the Berlin Frankfurt corridor, heightening fears of harassment to tighten Western access to Berlin.
Congress gave Kennedy broad congressional backing for actions to counter the Cuban military buildup. The House approved a Cuba resolution 384 to 7 after Senate approval 86 to 1. A United States Air Force RB47 bomber from Forbes AFB crashed on takeoff near Topeka Kansas killing four crew members including co pilot Lt Col James Woolbright and navigator Captain Bruce Kowal. He will arrive at 7 10 p m and address Wheeling Island Stadium at 8 10 p m with five Democratic congressmen and two senators on the program. Governor Barron will introduce him before a 9 10 p m departure from the airport.
Skippy the chimpanzee known as Cheetah in early Tarzan films died at Griffith Park Zoo at age 34. The longtime animal companion to Johnny Weissmuller lived at the zoo since 1939 and his death marks the end of an era for Hollywood’s jungle star.
