Oak Hill city manager C F Waugh announced sewer assessments start October 1 The charge is 050 per 15 000 gallons and 030 per each additional thousand gallons The assessment will be billed with the monthly water bill and applies whether sewer is used or not. property owners with sewer access should connect before October 1 per city notice.
The Mount Hope Union Choir plans a Thursday performance of The First Union Choir Spruces Up a three act play by the choir at the First Union Baptist Church. Cast includes Mrs Aleis Watkins Mrs Samantha Scruggs Miss Addie Fleming Clar ence Edmondson Mrs Eunice Fleming and more. Proceeds benefit church activities.
A Huffman family reunion occurred at J. L. Huffman’s Oak Hill home with many relatives from Elyria Ohio Quinwood Beckley Summersville and Charleston in attendance. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Huffman plus extended family members and their children sharing an all day gathering in Wood County.
Eight Fayette County couples were issued marriage licenses by County Clerk Lacy Neely. Erma G Boninsegne of Wyco joins 49 fellow students as one of 50 enrollments in the Medical College of Virginia School of Nursing in Richmond. She is a Mullens High School graduate, daughter of Mr and Mrs BY Boninsegne.
Former Miss Alina Bailey styled in Bennett home for a miscellaneous shower hosted by Mrs. Lucille Bennett. Attendees included Mrs. W. C. Caldwell, Mrs. Tessie Smith, Mrs. Sessile Syme, Mrs. Irene Dodd, Mrs. Violet Lane, Mrs. Euelah Prather, Mrs. Clara Neely, Mrs. Evelyn Toney, Mrs. Nora Starks, Bertha Smith, C. R. Zane Gray Nichols of Craigsville is listed in critical condition at McClung Hospital Richwood after a drunken driving collision on the Cam Censar road. He suffered severe neck scalp and leg cuts and a broken pelvis when the left front wheel failed and the car fell over a hill into the river.
Mullens note: seven year old Karyl Lynn White daughter of Emory and Mrs. White of Moran Apartments on First Street returns to Ben Dunman Grade School after a three day absence due to a fall at the apartment building stairs injuring her right arm. She received treatment at Tayine Hospital.
Mrs Lydia Tyree wife of H D Tyree of Grave Creek died at 3 a m yesterday after an extended illness. Survived by husband a son Grayson Wood of California and a daughter Kathleen Smith of Kincaid Funeral arrangements pending arrival of her son from California.
The Edwight ceremony united Miss Irene Delores Cassell and Clyde Berrer on Monday September 20 at 7:45 p.m. officiated by Rev. F. P. Cooke. Irene wore a gray suit with green accessories and a red rose bud corsage. both attended Marsh Fork High School. The couple plan to live with the groom’s parents after a reception at the home.
TORONTO Rev Daniel A Lord Roman Catholic educator and editor from St Louis Mo warned that marriages based on love alone are doomed. He told a downtown audience that until the late middle ages people married for practical reasons not love. He outlined four M s mind money manners and morals and jabbed at a husband who calls his wife a ball and chain saying he deserves one.
A federal grand jury opens an investigation into the DuPont industrial empire with subpoenas served on five large corporations. Similar subpoenas are expected for three more firms. Kilsyth resident Frank J. Kinsler denies being the same man as Frank J. Kinsler of Sun, recently indicted by the Fayette County Grand Jury for breaking and entering the V. P. Spradlin Store and theft last July. He states the two five men are cousins and he is the Kilsyth resident.
Register staff reports a marriage license issued Friday to Alda Murley, 27, and Esther Cline, 6, both of Simon, at the county clerk’s office in Pineville.
Moler, chairman of the Wyoming County draft board, reports 2363 youths born 1922 to 1929 registered for the draft as of now. Questionnaires are prepared for registrants, with no call issued yet for Crewe Moler.
The Wyoming County Classroom Teacher's Association held its first 1948 49 meeting at Mullens High School. Mary Staats was re elected president with officers including Mrs Josephine Damewood vice president Mrs Norbert Morgan secretary and Miss Mary Helen Kirby treasurer. Membership drive aimed to boost from 76 of 299 to 10 percent and delegates for Jackson’s Mid October 8 9 10 were named. Eva Keyser Woodrow Wilson High librarian Beckley spoke on the association's work and year program, with Miss Ethel Keyser as guest. Fred Shannon Jr Pineville sang three solos with piano by Mrs W C Bailey Jr Pineville. A tea social hour followed hosted by several Mullens High School teachers.
Mrs Albert Pauley 26 of Mullens Hill is somewhat improved at Tay lor Hospital after an automobile crash on State Route 10 between Hiawatha and Giotto. She suffered a fractured skull and a badly broken left collar bone. Three others including her two year old daughter Barbara Ann sustained minor injuries. Frances Cooper 18 and James Cooper also rode in the Pauley car. The car left the highway, dropped 15 feet, struck a tree and halted on its side near a railroad track.
Dr and Mrs W L Kelly and sons Pat and Mike of Bluefield and Mrs H G NeGraw of Ravencliff were guests of Mrs Lee P Bailey. Mrs James Starkey and infant visited Grundy Virginia parents Mr and Mrs Frank Starkey. Mr and Mrs Garth Cook and Sandra of Naomi visited family in Wyoming with Princess Jackson, former Pineville resident now in Naomi.
Otto Flaim a 22 year old Wyco mine brakeman was treated at Beckley Hospital for injuries to his right foot after a mine car ran over it. The accident occurred about 6 30 pm Saturday at the Wyco operation of the F C Minter Coal Company.
An invitation is issued to members of the Eastern Star and Masonic Fraternity to attend the installation of officers for Assembly No. 14 Order of Rainbow for Girls at the American Legion Hall tonight. Rainbow members should arrive for the regular meeting at 7 p.m. in Mount Hope.
The Armed Forces medical group says doctors dentists and nurses are in short supply and some form of draft may be needed after Congress rejected a draft for doctors up to 45. Navy V-2 and Army training programs could order graduates to active duty. Admiral Boone projects 3000 doctors required by next spring.
Mullens city records show two recent building permits issued for additions. City Clerk G B McGraw says all new structures must be approved beforehand to meet fire code standards and receive a permit. Mrs Jeff Goode seeks to enlarge a garage apartment for about 800 dollars. Armanda Muonkin plans a 12 by 12 foot tool shed addition costing around 150 dollars with brick siding on a frame structure.
London reports a Swedish surgeon's device to replace the heart during surgery. Dr Clarence Crafoord and Dr Viking Bjork describe a machine that short circuits the great artery and pumps oxygen to the bloodstream to keep the brain alive during 30 minutes of opening the heart. Seven dogs survived the process without ill effects in Stockholm experiments.
Corinne Mrs Clifton Meadows entertained for her son Michael on his third birthday anniversary at their Corinne home. Mrs Stuart Houck of West Mullens assisted. Kids played games with prizes to Tug Houck Lilla Mae Mullens and Sandra Kay Meadows. Guests included Kathleen Donna Sue Shirley and Douglas Patrick.
In Wood Green north London F P Stebbings the bee millionaire blames atom bombs for a disastrous season. He says bees yield is one sixth normal after Britain’s wet summer and he has lost three million bees to wind and rain. Stebbings claims no good bee weather since the bombs were dropped.
The Wyoming County Circuit Court will stay in session from October 1 to October 22 with 18 chancery cases and 62 divorce actions on the docket. The opening day includes Beckley National Bank v Hayes Baker Coal Co and several State of West Virginia suits, while October 12 covers multiple motions and judgments, with continued cases listed for later hearings. The session proceeds despite Columbus Day unless objections are raised by counsel.
