Workmen of the C and P Telephone company are rooting a ditch from Main Street down North Kanawha and up to Skelton to expand facilities for Beckley. Underground cables will improve wartime communications. Sidewalks and parts of North Kanawha Street will be rebuilt before winter. The project will not disrupt users along the route or remove poles. The city widened North Kanawha in 1931 but alleys behind houses were unavailable, preventing pole removal.

Prison Inspector Reviews Local Jail Conditions
Richard W. Wickes a federal prison inspector from Baltimore arrived yesterday and will stay over the week end to investigate county jail conditions. The inquiry precedes Judge Ben Moore’s decision on whether Sheriff Ash Mankin and Jailey P. Thomas met their 60 day probation terms after July contempt findings. Wickes spent 10 days here in late August to early September and offered improvement suggestions but could not report on conditions yet. He will file his report with Judge Moore in Charleston.
