Washington column flags a health themed holiday season with medical gifts from catalogs. Highlights include jewel encrusted pill boxes a pill purse with five bottles and a spoon a medically approved mouth to mouth breathing device and a prone position TV viewer. Also noted is a cigarette case designed to limit smoking to ten cigs.
Weather outlook shows a slight rise in temperatures with increasing cloudiness tonight, lows around 45 to 50 east and in the 50s west. Tuesday expected to be cloudy and warmer with a chance of showers. Beckley reports a low of 62 yesterday and readings in the 58 to 60 range today. Oak Hill has a 42 degree low with a mild morning. River and lake gauges show Greenbrier and Lake at normal, clear conditions with 1.3 gates open and Hinton gauge at 1.7 feet.
At Varna, Bulgaria the 138th International Astronautical Congress opened with Western calls for Russia to end secrecy over its space program. Swedish space medicine expert Dr Ake Hjertstrand said seven veils of secrecy remain, urging disclosure of rendezvous work and moon mission plans. Douglas Aircraft engineer Raymond W Hallet Jr urged disclosure of progress toward two orbiting ships and the first manned lunar trip. The United States has already announced its lunar program.
President Kennedy held an informal sea meeting with Pakistan President Ayub Khan aboard the destroyer Joseph P Kennedy Jr off Narragansett Bay Rhode Island. The talks followed a holiday spell and Kennedy planned a late afternoon return to Washington.
The noon ticker shows the Dow Jones Industrial Average at 585.25, down 6.53 points, the 20 industrials at 117.36, down 0.43, utilities at 119.63, down 1.17, and the overall stock index at 204.34, down 1.90. Volume traded reaches 1,990,000.
William Collins, 36, suffered a fractured left ankle and severe facial cuts when the vehicle apparently slept at the wheel and crashed into a rock ledge. His son James Collins, 20, escaped with bruises as the car skidded about 35 yards, flipped, and struck the bank while en route to Oak Hill to work with a carpenter's crew. No charges were filed against the driver.
U S attorneys planned to cite 16 University of Mississippi officials for contempt and seek an order to admit James H Meredith to the all white university in Oxford. The Fifth Circuit would hear the case against the state College Board and three other officials with Meredith's attorneys hoping for a late registration if favorable.
Oswald Jacoby, the nation's top bridge player, still awaits a direct reply from Charles Goren to a make-or-break 120 hand match to settle their abilities. Jacoby says Goren cites busyness and notes others ahead in line. Goren says he would likely lose and calls Jacoby behind the times.
After two years of hunting a rapist killer who assaulted two women in Brooklyn he returned to strike again at a 53 year old nurse Janet Chisholm. Police staged a feigned sleep in her bed and when the attacker entered they sprang the trap. The suspect Charles Gumby 37 of Carlisle Pa was identified. The attempt ended with an undercover policewoman in the nurse’s bed and three detectives in the room.
New York Mets announce the 72-year-old Casey Stengel will manage the team again in 1963. Stengel, famed for guiding the Yankees to 10 pennants and seven World Series titles, appeared upbeat at a press conference with General Manager George Weiss.
New Zealand Prime Minister Keith Holyoake began a week long US visit meeting Kennedy in Washington and addressing the U N General Assembly. Algerian soldiers ringed Algiers to crush opposition to Ahmed Ben Bella. Liu Chien appointed China first ambassador to Laos coalition government as ties with Laos shift. Three US Army helicopters hit by ground fire southeast of Tra Vinh Viet Nam two American casualties one Vietnamese captain wounded. Mediators to resume talks on the Chicago and North Western Railway strike near settlement. Souphanouvong deputy Lao coalition premier visited Mao Tse tung and Zhou En Lai in Peiping en route to Moscow for medical treatment.
An airliner carrying 55 U.S. servicemen and 13 dependents ditching 550 miles northwest of Ireland triggered a large mercy operation. Ninety survivors were rescued, 25 missing, two confirmed dead, and at least three injured as ships and planes from the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada combed the rough seas. The craft's captain, John D. Murray, and crew guided the doomed flight into the sea after engines failed.
Washington UPI reports the Senate Post Office Committee approved a bill pairing across the board rate hikes with a $1 billion pay raise for 1.5 million government workers. The measure would raise first class letters from four to five cents and airmail from seven to eight cents, with newspapers and magazines rates also increased.
Defense Department released names of 68 passengers aboard the Flying Tiger Super Constellation that ditched in the Atlantic. The list shows many soldiers and dependents from states including West Virginia, with 49 reported rescued from the wreckage as search efforts continued.
Arnold Lee Vance, 15, and Roger Lee Belcher, 16, face separate Fayette County trials in Fayetteville for the May 20, 1961 shooting deaths of Dr. Arch Wingrove, 84, and housekeeper Mrs. Georgia Broyles, 79. Vance’s trial was due to start this afternoon as a jury was impaneled at noon.
