Thieu Narrowly Missed In Enemy Artillery Barrage

Thieu narrowly escaped an artillery barrage near Quang Tri City as his convoy headed to a marine base for awards. UPI reported Thieu, Gen Cao Van Vien, Gen Ngo Quang Truong, and Gen Bui The Law were aboard when 130mm shells hit near the base. US jets conducted strikes in North Vietnam, with damage to bridges and warehouses and one A7 Corsair shot down. Casualties numbers cited: 19,589 North Vietnamese killed, 9,022 wounded, 2,002 South Vietnamese dead. Quang Tri forces pressed north of the city toward the DMZ amid ongoing fighting and public celebrations planned in Saigon for victory.

Raleigh County Circuit Clerk Harold Hanks and County Clerk Fred Stacy will attend a two day session this week to prepare as executive secretaries to local crime and intergovernmental relations commissions. They will gain raises of 2400 dollars annually and must attend meetings, record proceedings, and compile data. The legislature assigns these duties statewide. effective January 1, 1973, with the Raleigh County Court yet to act on creating the commissions.

Utility Tax Return Shows Increase

The first half distribution of public utility taxes totaled $13.5 million, up $593,700 from last year, state Auditor Denzil L. Gain er reported Tuesday. Kanawha County led with $1.66 million, followed by Cabell, Harrison, Grant, and Fayette. Charleston received $130,000 in city shares.
