The New Math Explained to Children and Parents in Plain Terms

The piece illustrates how first graders explore counting with pebbles to grasp one to one correspondence and sets as a foundation for the new math. It discusses teachers, students like Jimmy and Bobby, and the shift toward understanding addition, subtraction, place value, and early algebra through concrete activities and Cuisenaire rods. It also notes exposure to alternative bases and the binary system used in computing, linking new math to future tech literacy.

The New Math Explained in Plain Terms for Parents

The article discusses number lines, Countingman dolls, and place value to show how new math emphasizes meaning and discovery over drill. It notes varied implementations across districts, reviews studies by Wai-Ching Ho, and concludes that while drills aid learning, meaningful teaching remains essential and there is no single royal road to the new mathematics.
