Mt Hope Lions Club observes 20th anniversary with toastmaster governor

Governor Okey L. Patteson served as toastmaster at the Mt. Hope Lions Club anniversary marking his 20th year as a member. The event drew 87 of 90 members with wives and guests at the club house, which now features a large dining area, lounge spaces, and a new Boy Scout building funded by the club.

Sale of 59 Guernseys Slated for Wednesday

Fifty nine registered Guernseys will be offered at the West Virginia State Guernsey Sale on the State Fairgrounds Wednesday at 1 p.m. Breeders from five states consign 40 cows and bred heifers 16 open heifers and three bulls from TB and Bang's accredited herds.

Water Systems Sold by Company to West Virginia Water Co

GAK HILL water systems at Lochgelly and Summerlee were sold to the West Virginia Water Company from the New River Coal Company. Plans include connecting to the Oak Hill line, serving the communities from the Oak Hill plant, laying 7000 feet of six inch main, and installing meters at homes and businesses in Summerlee and Lochgelly. Rights of way and two 50 foot lots for tanks were also purchased.

Oak Hill Employment Office posts 23 placed in suitable jobs

The Oak Hill office of the Department of Employment Security reports 23 people placed in suitable employment. August visits to the local office totaled 2 771 with 75 new applications. Of referrals to local openings, 96 were sent, including 24 women and 27 veterans. In Pine Knob, Mr and Mrs Arthur Dickens welcome a daughter born Sept 13 at Charleston General Hospital.

Reservations set for Capitol District Convention at Oak Hill

Oak Hill senior women's club hosts meeting announcing Oct. 6 convention with speakers Mrs. Dell Caudill, Mrs. H. G. Muntzing, Mrs. A. H. Van Landingham, and Rev. C. S. Donnelly. Reservations due by Sept. 28. Guests include co hosts Ollie Blake and Tom Brash with devotional by Mrs. Robert Flack.

Neighbor Shot and Suspect Surrenders in Beechwood Incident

Reglater Slats Writer Mullens-all Long of Beechwood fired a 38 revolver at his neighbor Ernest Turner and surrendered to City Police. Turner, wounded with multiple injuries, was listed as fair at a Beckley hospital. Long, 43, says Turner fired at his home earlier. He faces Wyoming Criminal Court on an alleged knife wound case from April involving Robert Scott in an Allen Junction tavern.

Year’s Meetings of Civic League to Begin Tonight

Funeral services for Nellie Jane Ferguson Van Dyke 34 were set for 2 p m today at her Mt Hope home with Rev Leonard Hewitt officiating. Burial followed in Marsteller Cemetery. She was born at Pax Branch and survived by husband David Van Dyke father Ben Ferguson and brother Ernest Ferguson.

Funeral services incomplete for James Lang Mt Hope miner

Funeral services remain incomplete for James Lang 46 of Mt Hope who died Thursday morning at Oak Hill Hospital after a weeklong illness. A retired miner and Baptist Church member born in Missouri he is survived by his wife two brothers and five children. The body lies at Collins Funeral Home Glen Jean.

Betty Compton Graduates as Nurse at Lewis Gale Hospital

Miss Betty Compton, daughter of Mr and Mrs J J Compton of Frantz Avenue, earned a nursing diploma from Lewis Gale Hospital in Roanoke Virginia on Wednesday. Her mother and sister Pauline attended the exercises. Pauline, a registered nurse, will work as health nurse at Alderton Broaddus College in Philippi and pursue a bachelor of science degree.

Funeral rites set for Nancy Isabelle Cline Poe in Mullens

Nancy Isabelle Cline Poe 69 of Cliffside Apartments Mullens dies Sunday at Bluefield Sanitarium after a heart ailment. Funeral services Tuesday at 11 a.m. from First Methodist Church with three ministers officiating. Burial in Coon Fork Cemetery near Pineville. Survived by son Everette Poe and four daughters. numerous grandchildren and siblings. Body to be moved to daughter’s home in Mullens at 3 p.m. today.

Mullens Furniture Firm Chartered By State

A charter was issued for the Tomehin Furniture Company, Inc. in Mullens with $100,000 capital. Incorporators are Joe Tomehin and Haareld Tomehin of Princeton and Abe S. Tomchin of Northfork. The same group also received a charter for the Tormchin firm at Northfork.

Wounded in Action Madison Soldier Identified

Pfc. Okey T. Adkins of Madison, ward of Saul Shriver, suffered wounds in Korea per Casualty List 98 released by the Department of Defense. The report confirms he was wounded and not missing in action, correcting earlier status.

Miss Joyce Brown Weds Jack Mullens in Methodist Church

Joyce Agnes Brown became Mrs Jack D Mullens in a ceremony at the First Methodist Church with Rev O H Dorsey officiating. The bride, daughter of Mr and Mrs Boyd B Brown, wore white satin and carried a blue orchid. The reception followed at the Brown home with out of town guests from Peterstown Stone Prince ton and Pineville among others. 20 Arrested on Intoxication Counts

Whitesville police jailed 20 people in the Whitesville Jail on a record Saturday night for intoxication. Police Chief M. Weikle said the 20 arrests were all intoxication cases and tied to a three week payday in area mines. He noted roughly 30 additional arrests this month across two prior Saturdays.

A. E. Hendricks of Orgas is reported in satisfactory condition at Kanawha Valley Hospital after a drive shaft on his rear exploded in his face at Leevale, injuring his face and eyes around noon Friday.

Rupert Winston Doss of 308 Walnut Street Princeton died Saturday night at Luke's Hospital Bluefield after a heart attack. Funeral services were to be held at 2 30 p m in Princeton Presbyterian Church with Rev John Womeldorf and Rev G C Currie officiating. Interment at Monte Vista Cemetery. Survived by wife Myrtle and children James C Doss of Richmond Virginia Mrs William Branham and Mrs Jack Preston of Mullens. He was a Wyoming County Board of Education member and an ex Mullens merchant. He belonged to Presbyterian Church Masons Shrine Knights of Pythias and Beni Kedem. One child preceded him in death.

j On honeymoon with fellow college student jOn Honeymoon Today The Associated Press report from Port Chester New York states that former Caral Ann Paight, acquitted in the mercy killing of her cancer doomed father, is married to 25 year old Robert Anderson in Stamford Connecticut. The ceremony was performed by Rev Frederick W Dearing at his home. The notice also reports the Bailey family of Cyclone announcing the birth of their sixth child, a 5 pound 8 ounce daughter.
