Rights Bill Fate Up To Dirksen
President Johnson said the fate of his open housing civil rights bill depends largely on GOP leader Everett Dirksen. He noted serious Senate problems and hoped to win Dirksen’s support. A late Wednesday vote to end the filibuster was expected to fail. Mansfield may drop the bill by week’s end. Dirksen opposes the partial housing discrimination ban, while other sections empower the attorney general, bolster civil rights protections, and target cross state riot incitement.
