Third Tropical Storm Celia Near Hurricane Threat

Celia, the third tropical storm, churns in the Atlantic east of Puerto Rico and is expected to become a hurricane within hours. A Navy hurricane hunter mission will verify position as Celia moves west-northwest at about 15 mph. Warnings place the center near 17.1N 51.8W, about 900 miles east of San Juan with winds 55-60 mph and expanding gale bands.

Powerful quake reported near Iran by Uppsala seismology lab

UPPSALA Sweden UPI reports the seismological institute of Uppsala University recorded a strong earthquake near Iran. It struck around 10 04 p m local time with epicenter about 2733 miles southeast of Uppsala in southern Iran. The quake began at 9 57 p m local time.

West Virginia Weather Preview Sunny Warm Outlook

Mostly sunny and quite warm with highs near 88 to 92. Mountain areas stay slightly cooler in the mid 80s. Tonight will be fair and mild with lows 52 to 57 east and 57 to 64 west. Friday brings some clouds but temperatures stay warm with little change. Beckley region reports clear skies and modest river gauge readings near Hinton as conditions remain dry.

P2V Crashes Kill Nine Navy Reservists in California

Nine Navy reservists from Georgia died when a P2V Neptune patrol bomber crashed and burned after skimming rooftops in a heavily populated area near Los Alamitos Naval Air Station. Names withheld pending next of kin notification. The Neptune, on a training flight, crashed in an open field after taking off. It was the second Neptune crash in southern California in four years.

Washington UPI The House Republican Leader Charlie Halleck was found not guilty of shooting doves over a baited field during a private club hunt in North Carolina. He was absent due to being in Indiana and denied any knowledge of baiting. House members urged the North Carolina commissioner to dismiss charges.

Kennedy signals bigger space budget to beat Russia

Nearly-Severed Leg Reattached to Boy in NY Hospital

Ten year old Mark Turco of Babylon was crushed when his brother started the family car and his left leg was torn from thigh to hip. Surgeons at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip rejoined bone, arteries, and muscles and sewed the leg back on after a five pint blood transfusion. Mark remained in satisfactory but critical condition days after the operation.

Sanders Wins Democratic Nomination For Georgia Governor

ATLANTA UPI Carl E. Sanders a moderate on race issues in Deep South terms was nominated governor in a bitter Georgia Democratic primary. He defeated former Gov. Marvin Griffin, who warned Sanders' victory would bring wholesale integration. Final returns showed Sanders leading 362,525 to 217,895 with 1,240 of 1,825 precincts reporting. Runoffs loom for other contests as James C. Davis and Charles L. Weltner force a September 26 runoff.

In Berlin today three armored troop carriers crossed the East West Berlin border escorted by British military police jeeps. Western Allies warned the Soviet commander in Germany that such movements would not be allowed after Friday.

720 Hold Federal Whisky Permits in West Virginia

In West Virginia only state stores may sell whisky legally and residents have bought over 720 federal licenses to dispense it in taverns clubs and other establishments. For $50 stamps protect buyers from federal interference though no immunity from state prosecutions exists. A dispenser selling without a stamp faces up to two years in prison and a $5000 fine. Stamps cover fiscal year July 1 to June 30 and must be renewed annually. As of late 194? the sales figure stood at 722 in West Virginia.

Liquor Stamp Holders Named Across Counties

In Tri County area eight Raleigh County establishments bought federal liquor stamps including American Legion Beckley and Julia's Tavern at MacArthur. Fayette County lists ten stamps to clubs and venues such as Owls Club Glen Jean and Hawk's Nest Golf Club. Wyoming County saw two stamps issued to American Legion of Wyoming County Post 106 and Loyal Order of Moose. 13 rural counties had none. Stamps come as RLD for retail liquor dealers and RDBW for beer and wine, each costing $50 and granting liquor, wine, or beer dispensing rights.
