Beckley Receives 12400 Public Utility Tax Check

Beckley collected 12400 from public utility taxes for the first half of 1969 70 and 13720 more from real estate and capitation taxes boosting city funds. State Auditor Denzil Gainer told Mayor John Wesley Smith the utility tax could be used for current expenses. Second half distributions arrive in March 1970. Sheriff’s settlement shows 1968 real estate taxes at 10207.10 and 1968 capitation taxes at 3513.

Utility Tax Distribution From Public Property

West Virginia municipalities and counties shared more than 12 million dollars in public utility property tax receipts for the first half of the 1969 70 year. Kanawha County led with 15 million, Cabell 513 thousand, Harrison 489 thousand, Wayne 348 thousand, and McDowell 437 thousand. cities shared 706 thousand, Charleston receiving 107 thousand.

Evans Officer Pleased With Mild Sentence

Lt. Ronald C. Ramsey described the reprimand and seniority reduction he received for the crash between the destroyer Frank E. Evans and the Australian carrier Melbourne as very fake. Ramsey pleaded guilty to dereliction of duty and negligence, saying the one day court martial and mild sentence were fair and he would like to return to sea. Navy sources indicated Ramsey’s plea could lead to dropping charges against Cmdr. Albert McLemore, the Evans captain, who was asleep when the ship changed course and was cut in two, killing 74 sailors.

Washington based National Earthquake Information Center reports a strong 6.6 magnitude quake at 4 57 a m EDT in the Aleutian chain felt on Adak and Amchitka. Four shocks preceded it and aftershocks followed. no injuries or damage reported and a sea wave warning was issued then canceled.
