John Bensola Elliott 59, assistant superintendent of Raleigh County Schools since 1933, died at 2 30 a m after a heart attack. First Negro named to such a post in West Virginia, Elliott led in Raleigh County from July 1 1933, earlier a principal at McAlpin Elementary. A Knoxville University alumnus with BA in biology, masters from Fisk, Elliott High School in Edwight bears his name. Born Harvey Fayette County Sept 5 1900, he lived in North Beckley. Surviving wife Gustine Banks Elliott a 4 H home economics counselor, son John Bensola Elliott Jr, and sister Eva Howell. Funeral pending at Ritchie Johnson Funeral Parlor.

Piedmont Airlines launches nightly service from Raleigh County Memorial Airport with Flight 314 at 7:20 p.m. daily to Charleston Parkersburg and Columbus Ohio, with connections to Chicago and the West Coast. The biennial West Virginia Mining and Industrial Show will run Sept 23 to 24 at the Charleston Civic Auditorium. Sponsor Charleston Chamber of Commerce predicts it as the state’s most outstanding event of its kind.
