Johnson Reaffirms Viet Nam Pullout After Communists Timetable
President Johnson told Detroit and Lancaster audiences that U S forces will leave Viet Nam only after a Communist timetable for stopping aggression is shown. He underscored that troops stay "because aggression is there" and will depart once North Vietnamese infiltration ends. The remarks respond to Charles de Gaulle who urged a withdrawal timetable as a step toward peace talks. The shift emphasizes US policy while criticizing one sided proposals.
