Morganthau Requests $6.5 Billion Tax Increase

Treasury Secretary Morgenthau asked the Senate Finance Committee for legislation to levy an additional 6.5 billion dollars in taxes on individuals beyond the House bill of 6.271 billion. The plan includes a 4.48 billion dollar postwar rebate to individuals and would raise total tax collections to about 30 billion for a full year.

City to escort Greer Garson for Memorial Day visit

Captain Arnold Moore of the state police will lead Greer Garson from Bluefield to Beckley tomorrow afternoon with city police and civilian defense auxiliaries guarding the approach to the speaker’s stand. Marines from Beckley and Charleston will form an honor guard and open doors for the actress before she addresses the crowd. Traffic will be restricted on Main and Fayette streets near the Memorial building and bank area to keep the platform clear.
