A United States Saturn booster roared aloft at 11 06 a m EDT for its maiden space flight from Cape Canaveral. The 1 162 foot rocket reached about 100 miles up on an eight to nine minute mission and landed in the Atlantic after gathering telemetry data.
Police in Encino maintain a 24 hour guard at the Clark Gable estate to protect infant John Clark Gable amid a reported kidnap plot. Detectives withheld guard numbers, citing security. A man who overheard a plot in a Los Angeles restaurant led to the alert, with the tipster volunteering to take a lie detector test.
A Trinidad born student Wendell A Mottley was initiated into Yale Delta Psi amid a protest by five southern students from Charlottesville Virginia. The secret ceremony joined 25 pledges as full members and ended with the leaders declining to comment on outcomes. The visiting group left by chartered plane, leaving Yale to decide whether Virginia Tech would remain in the national fraternity.
About 110,000 utility workers struck for four hours in Paris, the city experiencing a blackout at times. It followed a 24 hour walkout by about 400,000 rail and state employees. France's three largest unions backed the actions to press for wage boosts and an end to the government's pay freeze.

The State Department warned Moscow that unilateral Communist moves fueling tension at the Berlin border hinder any settlement. Soviet tanks in East Berlin were cited as Russia’s responsibility under postwar four power accords, while a U.S. protest over East German interference with Allied travel was delivered in Moscow. Britain backed the U.S. stance as talks on Berlin continue.
Alice Douglas 28 of Parkersburg won the 1961 Mrs. West Virginia title in Morgantown, defeating four regional entrants. She and husband earn an all expense paid two week trip to Fort Lauderdale to compete in Mrs. America on November 12 23. Runner up Marion McQuade 44 Richwood mother of 15 children. Other finalists were Mary Frances Gross Clarkburg Joyce Broyles Morgantown and Janice Sickle Runner Fairmont.
The American Cancer Society said it has sent materials to 80 percent of the nation’s high schools to advise students against smoking. In the past year more than 12,000 copies of a filmstrip titled To Smoke or Not To Smoke and 3 million copies of a pamphlet Shall I Smoke were distributed to high schools and students.
A college freshman held high school sweetheart Donna Van Pelt hostage for six hours in Charlotte using a rifle before being subdued with a Mickey Finn knockout drop in whisky. The 17 year old escaped unharmed as Harris, nephew of W T Harris, was jailed on assault charges after firing at his father and later viewing football films with the girl.
U S Army troops escorted an American car into East Berlin under heavy guard as about 30 Soviet tanks waited near the border and British forces moved anti tank guns closer. Two jeeps led and trailed by armed MPs carried four men each, while East Berlin police briefly blocked a U S sedan trying to exit.
In Moscow Khrushchev told the 22nd Communist Congress that West Berlin’s freedom is not a Soviet aim and warned that delaying a German peace treaty risks grave consequences for peace. He said Western strength is not the basis for negotiations and urged reason and justice on the West. Voroshilov apologized for early errors, reading his regret statement due to health.
West Virginia tax receipts for the first quarter of 1961-62 rose by 6.5 million from the prior year, reaching 33.3 million. Personal income tax produced 5.1 million of the gain, while higher consumer sales tax and liquor profits shifts helped offset shortfalls in gross sales tax and liquor stock buildup.

Dave Carthon of Caples was shot to death Thursday night during an argument over a card game. Bennie Moton, 39, also of Caples, was held in McDowell County jail on a murder charge. Police said the shooting occurred at Moton's home.
State Police pursued clues after an unidentified man died from a skull fracture in Bluefield. He was found with head injuries along U S 52 in McDowell County and later tied to a Big Four area drive-in where he used the name Ed Taylor from Pittsburgh. Authorities cannot confirm cause of death or identity.
United Nations General Assembly votes 44 to 2 with 29 abstentions to urge renewal of an uninspected moratorium on nuclear tests. It plans a solemn appeal to Moscow to cancel a 50 megaton test while considering Outer Mongolia and Mauritania for membership. Morocco may oppose Mauritania's accession.
Five women on a trip to a Halloween bowling party in Red Wing Minnesota were burned in a car fire after a cigarette or spark ignited their potato sack costumes. Four victims, all in critical condition, were identified as Louise Quast 36 Zumbrota Alice Hadjer Zumbrota Neil Bohm ibach Hager City and Alfred Carlson 36 Red Wing. A fifth passenger Mrs John Stuber Red Wing sustained minor burns and was not hospitalized. Sheriff Zaillgitt described a rapid fire that engulfed the costumes and interior of the vehicle.
A federal jury convicted former diplomat Irvin C. Searbeck on three of four counts for slipping secret documents to Communist agents in Poland. He was acquitted on unlawfully removing a secret dispatch from the Warsaw embassy and faces up to 30 years in prison and a $30,000 fine pending sentencing. The defense claimed the information was trifling and shared to shield his Polish mistress Urszula Discher from coercion.
The USS Constellation, the world’s largest fighting ship, officially joins the U.S. Navy at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Commissioning was delayed by seven months after a deadly fire on December 19 that killed 50 workers and caused extensive damage. the carrier is 1,047 feet long and will carry 4,100 crew and an air group.
James Clark a 54 year old mechanical engineer at Itmann Nine No 1 mine died after his neck became entangled in a trolley wire during an accident at 3 a m. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Wyoming General Hospital at 5 35 a m. His body was sent to Sam Foglesong Funeral Home in Mullens for arrangements.
