Former Newspaperman Becomes Top Policy Adviser to Stevenson
A veteran editor and press secretary candidate, Clayton Fritchey, 52, emerges as Adlai Stevenson’s top policy adviser. He reshapes campaign messaging after a chaotic 1952 effort, envisions a new kind of newspaper, and hints at possibly becoming White House press secretary if Stevenson wins. Fritchey, a Georgetown resident and widower with a daughter, leads Digest magazine and oversees a vast wire-to-briefing operation, while pledging a more orderly news relationship for the closing campaign phase.
