President Truman urged a fool proof global disarmament framework under UN authority during a General Assembly address. He linked success to universal agreement, comprehensive safeguards, and continuous verification while stressing armed strength to deter aggression and preserve peace.
U S Marine pilots reported Red China guns firing into Korea five miles inside the border near Manpojin as South Korean ROK forces press toward Manchuria. Allied sources say most American troops will depart Korea by Christmas with frontline units within 35 miles of Manchuria.
In Berlin crowds of about a half million filled City Hall Square as Gen. Lucius D. Clay dedicated a 10 ton Freedom Bell atop West Berlin City Hall to resist tyranny. East Berliners from the Soviet sector joined, while Communist protesters called the bell a war bell. The bell’s voice was carried by over 2,000 radio stations worldwide including to the Soviet bloc.
Banking Commissioner John H. Hoffman announced that West Virginia's 106 state banks and trust companies held $486,373,657.70 as of October 4, a new peak. Deposits rose by $1,719,297.13 and capital by $1,742,894.40, with cash and due from banks up $1,576,412.35, and loans and discounts up $4,387,675.28, while U S Government bonds fell by $3,077,919.89.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the cost of living index on Sept 15 at 173.8, 0.4 percent below the fall 1948 peak and 2.5 percent above last year. It notes a method revision for a more representative market basket amid changing buying patterns after Korea War onset. A three day search ended with one dead and three injured after four crewmen ditched emergency parachutes from a high flying B 50 bomber. Staff Sgt Henry Dillingham 35 Savannah Ga was found yesterday ending a 72 hour hunt involving 500 men and several airplanes. The injured airmen had reached safety.
Police set roadblocks after a blood stained Huntington Cab Company taxi was found near Cirtsville. The body of Julian Buie, a cab driver with the Huntington Cab Company, was found near Salt Rock after he was last seen leaving the Downtown Huntington cab stand around 10 PM.
San Francisco reports Al Jolson, famed mammy singer and entertainer who toured for USO troops in World War II and Korea, died of a coronary at 64 after socializing with friends in the St Francis Hotel. He had just returned from Korea and met MacArthur briefly in Tokyo. Jolson leaves widow Erle Galbraith and two adopted sons Asa Jr and Al Jr, plus ex wives Henrie tta Keller Alma Osborne and Ruby Keeler. His career spanned stage film and radio with hits like Mammy Sonny Boy Suwanee and California Here I Come. He starred in The Jazz Singer and Jolson Story and planned a Bing Crosby radio show recording that never occurred.
Orono Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith proposed a 1952 GOP ticket pairing General Dwight Eisenhower with California Governor Earl Warren during a University of Maine address. She indicated she is not considering the vice presidential candidacy herself, though some Republicans have floated an Ike Smith ticket for 1952.

William Jasper Mills of Crab Orchard died last night at Beckley Hospital from a self inflicted gunshot wound to the chest described as personal safety related by State Police. Mills told his wife that everything had gone wrong today and he would kill himself. Miss Margaret Stover found him after the shot in the kitchen as Mrs Mills and Stover’s father and a drug store worker assisted. He died about an hour after hospital admittance. Funeral arrangements are pending. survivors include his wife two daughters three brothers two half sisters and his parents.
Wilburn Reed admitted guilty to breaking and entering in Raleigh County Criminal Court. Howard D. Burgess pleaded guilty to auto theft with two grand larceny counts. Jesse Wipperman faced a destruction of property charge and a maiming charge was sustained. Reeves Thompson Alma Howard Alma Foster and May Worley faced conspiracy charges continued. Several cases held for action and jurors excused until morning. Mose Boiosky of Charleston admitted to practice before the court on motion.
Washington reports another round of arrests in the hunt for Communist leaders as the Justice Department continues a broad sweep. Jose Estrada Castillo, 57, a Mexican national in the United States since 1919, was seized in Dallas as a member of the Communist Party executive committee. Additional detentions occurred in Detroit area including John Zydok, 53, of Poland, identified as financial secretary for the Detroit unit and Hamtramck lodge secretary of the International Workers Order.
President L Ebersole Gaines announced that about 3500 idle miners from 10 New River Company mines will resume work tonight. He noted terms cannot be discussed until operations restart. The strike began at Cranberry last week and four other mines closed yesterday as the remainder did not operate. George Titler of District 29, UMW, said he is trying to bring workers back.
Minor L. Scott of Grandview and Morlunda Farms of Lewisburg shared honors at the fourth New River Hereford Show and Sale in Daniels. Scott's Miss S. Blanchard, a yearling heifer, was champion female, and Morlunda's H. Regent 10th, a two year old, topped the bulls. About 100 attendees watched consignments of 30 lots including 22 females and eight bulls from Greenbrier Mercer Summers and Raleigh counties. Cash premiums were provided by the West Virginia Department of Agriculture and ribbon awards by Beckley National Bank. Judge was W. S. Miller of Kobleyard Hereford Farms, Weston. Auction planned for 1 p.m. with Col. A. W. Hamilton presiding.
