Last week Winding Gulf produced 228,616 tons up 5.4 percent from a year earlier while New River declined 1.8 percent to 244,320 tons. Year to date Winding Gulf totals 8,602,117 tons up 16 percent. New River totals 9,069,713 tons up 12.8 percent. Rabbit harvest nationwide skirts near 69 million pounds in a typical year.
A Raleigh County Criminal Court jury was impaneled to hear two bastardy cases against Harry Nixon of Beckley. The cases allege he fathered two children with Helen Hicks, with payments made during pregnancies. The trial stems from an appeal from Magistrate’s court and involves special prosecutor Clay S. Crouse and defense by J Q Hutchinson and Daird Ashworth. Sophia Man Returns From Pacific Cruise.
Funeral services for Emmett D. Thompson 53 who died from injuries in a October 16 Virginia automobile crash will be held at 2 pm in the Caffee Funeral Home Chapel with Rev B L Jones officiating. Burial follows at Mt Tabor Cemetery. Thompson a Welding Shipyard Company employee of Norfolk was treated at a veterans hospital in Kecougitan Va where he died the next day. Surviving are wife Beulaly Gunther Thompson of Beckley son Bill Thompson Huntington three daughters Mrs George Spurlock Huntington Mrs Harry Dorsey Beckley and Miss Sue Carol Thompson Beckley two brothers Vincent and Boyd Thompson Huntington two sisters Mrs Bell Ball Huntington and Mrs Ada Ackers Chillicothe Ohio and two grandchildren.
James E. Miller of Roderfield was fined 50 dollars and costs by Magistrate G O Mills on a drunk driving charge. Miller has appealed the verdict to the Raleigh County Circuit Court, according to State Police.
Attendees at the West Virginia Library Association annual meeting in Charleston include Raleigh County librarian Mrs Mary A Reese. Principal speakers are Paul Howard of the ALA and Elmer Gueder of WVU. The Kanawha County Public Library bookmobile will be open for inspection.

He is accused of stealing auto parts worth about 50 dollars from Curtis Keantz doing business as the Skelton Wrecking Company. A compact gamma ray detection device priced for soldiers in future atomic combat was revealed in Chicago. Dr Ole Landsverk of the University of Chicago said the pocket instrument is the only robust detector ready for field use and was developed over two years after security restrictions were lifted.
Jesse Sullivan of Charleston West Virginia secretary of the West Virginia Coal Producers Association was to undergo a major surgical operation in Cincinnati a day after two weeks of hospitalization for stomach ulcers Dr M A Blankenhorn said Sullivan’s condition prior to the operation was very good
