Sherman Burks and Wife Plead Guilty in Beckley Robbery
Sherman Burks and his wife Virginia pleaded guilty today to robbing Jonathan Brabban of Beckley. They were sentenced to four years in the state penitentiary. Brabban testified he was drugged after a drink with the Burks in Charleston April 26. Police found Brabban May 6 in an unclothed, unshaven state in an apartment. Dr Roy Ray said Brabban appeared drugged. The state charged the couple with forcing Brabban to sign 12 checks totaling 528 dollars, which were cashed. Prosecutor J Blackburn Watts called Brabban virtually kidnapped.

Egbert Rosecrans one of counsel for the convicted Lindbergh kidnaper spent a full day in the court library poring over past cases that he said paralleled Hauptmann's and inquiring into court procedure. Two Injured In Mine Accident At Frances
Two coal loaders were injured at 8 o'clock this morning in the E. C. Minter Coal company mine at Frances in a local explosion thought to have been caused by gas ignition. Noble Bailey, about 35, the more seriously hurt, was taken to Beckley hospital after treatment by Frances physicians. He suffered severe burns and was under morphine. Ben Cadle was only slightly burned and remained at the scene. Mine officials planned to investigate the blast, which did not halt work for the day.
