WVU to Probe Hazing Incident Involving Fi Batar Cappar

West Virginia University forms a four member panel led by Dean Joseph C. Gluck to investigate an alleged hazing incident in which Fi Batar Cappar paddled a student during initiation. Wildcat gas well near Beckley opens 115 million cf daily

A joint venture of Ashland Oil and Professional Oil Management struck a wildcat gas well at 5,600 feet in the Poca District Rocky Fork area, five miles north of Beckley. The well’s open-flow is estimated at 115 million cubic feet daily and will be fractured to stimulate production later this week.

Posthumous Medal of Honor Awarded for Vietnam Hero

President Nixon presented posthumous Medal of Honor awards to three servicemen including Spec four Carmel Harvey Jr. of Chicago for sacrificing himself to save comrades during a June 21, 1967 helicopter battle in Vietnam. His final act distracted the enemy, allowing two wounded men to be evacuated. The ceremony marked the 92nd 93rd and 6th such awards in Vietnam.

Car wreck claims life of 1961 Tilley at Secondary Pot 1

State police report a 1961 Tilley car ran off Secondary Pot 1 and struck a tree. Cpl. J. E. Heflin says it took six minutes to remove the body. The deceased is at Evans Funeral Home in Oceana.

Rescue Squad Responds to Illness on North Heber Street

Beckley Fire Department Rescue Squad was dispatched at 7:45 a.m. Thursday to 216 North Heber Street where 59 year old Otho Fisher was reported ill. He was transported to Beckley Veterans Administration Hospital by a local ambulance.

The state police tactical patrol squad arrested 16 individuals on Thursday with 10 for hazardous moving violations and 6 for non moving violations. They also issued 142 warnings, including 44 for hazardous moving violations and 98 for other road laws.

A farmer faces trial after workmen tore apart a pelt and trousers as evidence in a case about rescuing sheepdogs. A terrier puppy trapped in a drainpipe was found with the animals, while the court noted the dogs were not properly controlled. The judge awarded $3 in fines.

American Glass Bid Wins at Beckley Municipal Building

The Beckley city council accepted bids totaling 28122 for glass work and insulation at the municipal building. American Glass Co bid 229 for equipment while Beckley Glass Co and others submitted bids of 220 and 205.62 respectively, with several firms from Charleston and Oak Hills also participating in the process.
