Beckley officials discuss reappointing Hall as Chief of Police at the Beckley headquarters. He was appointed by outgoing Mayor George B. Chambers and confirmed by a council of three Democrats and two Republicans. Salary is $5,500 yearly.
New York reports Sen. Joseph McCarthy says top secret radar and related Army documents "turned up" in the Russian occupied sector of Germany. Sen. Everett Dirksen claimed 26 of 57 missing papers from Ft Monmouth were found in the Russian zone, while the Army had no information confirming the finds.
Lester R Johnson, a Black River Falls district attorney and former Progressive, defeated State Sen. Arthur L. Padrutt in a high turnout special election for Wisconsin Ninth District. Johnson campaigned to follow Hull’s votes and denounced farm policy, while Padrutt backed Eisenhower. Johnson's win marks rural Wisconsin's first Democratic representation in this district.
Fair weather in the north with lows 36 to 45 across the state and 46 to 52 in the south, clouds increasing. Thursday brings cloudy skies and warmer afternoon. Oak Hill and Glade Creek show low readings, rivers at Bellepoint and reservoirs at low stages with clear conditions.
Two Clear Creek residents Lincoln Stover and Mrs Juanita Workman, both 19 and 21, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering L. L. Fitz water's grocery store. Workman initially pleaded not guilty then changed plea after advice from attorney Benjamin Tissue who plans probation motions. Three Arnett men, Arvel Preston Combs, 20 Chrissie Combs, 18 and Carlos Frank Combs, 19, pleaded to petit larceny for a July 30 Milam's Service Station break-in and received three months each in county jail. Other appeals were withdrawn and defendants remanded. Herbert Judkins, Everett Perdue, Hosey McKinney faces additional charges and firearm possession tied to liquor manufacturing case.
John Wesley Wable, 24, ex Army man, left Albuquerque for Pennsylvania in custody as the Phantom of the Turnpike. He faces charges in the July killings of truckers Harry Pits and Lester Woodward and wounds incident, asserting innocence though claiming a counterfeit money role. County Atty Joseph M. Coughran says the case is solid with no other suspects.
Wilbur Rush White, 62, former vice president of the Bank of Danville in Boone County, pleads guilty to seven counts of embezzlement and two counts of making false ledger entries in federal court. The total shortage cited is $21,503. White, arrested May 12 in Riverside, California, had a $400 monthly salary and planned to open a restaurant in California.
NEW ORLEANS The Mouton twins Catherine Anne and Carolyn Anne born July 22 in Lafayette were separated at birth and have now recovered fully. Doctors say they are completely normal and happy, playing with toys and enjoying nurse attention as they head home with their parents, Lafayette Mayor Ashton Mouton and his wife.
City Democrats elect took oaths at Beckley City Hall ahead of Jan 1 1954 handover. Mayor elect Elmer L Davis Recorder-elect Emery J Smith and councilmen elect C L Bibb H P Meadows Noel Christian G C Porter and W R Campbell took the same oath to uphold the U S and West Virginia constitutions and discharge duties faithfully. The ceremony underscored unity in the new administration after the Oct 6 election victory over Republicans.
State Police Sgt G T Davis announced plans to file a murder charge against K C Dawkins after his surrender on October 2 following a shooting at Dawkins home that left James Penn, 26, dying from a stomach wound last night. Dawkins said he and Penn had prior trouble.
Washington says December draft calls 23000 men as in prior months. The five monthly calls total 1,584,430 inductees since the Korean War began, with the December figure keeping the pattern intact.
Two new fires were reported in McDowell and Monroe counties as part of District 4 forest fire reports from the State Conservation Commission. A day-old fire near Raleigh County is under control after burning about six acres between Cove's Creek and Massey's Branch, while other fires in the district are under control.

President Eisenhower issued an executive order adding refusal to testify before Congress on grounds of self incrimination to the grounds for dismissal of federal workers for security reasons. Lt Milo J Radulovich a 26 year old Air Force Reserve officer and father of two is ordered discharged as a doubtful security risk. A 10th Air Force board recommended termination of all commissions though HQ said his loyalty was not questioned. His father and sister were accused of radical ties and picket line activity.
A Sabena Belgian Air Lines Convair crashed and burned near Frankfurt as it departed Rhein Main airport from Salzburg headed to Brussels. The U S Civil Aviation Board reported all 48 aboard were killed, with German police confirming 45 bodies found. A witness described a difficult liftoff and an apparent attempt to return to the field. nearby, a KLM plane crash in 1981 killed 45 people.

In a mountain mill near Amigo, Frank Rowe 36 of Barkers Ridge died after a circle saw threw a slab hitting him. Arvel Whitt 33 of Basin area was critically injured and undergoing surgery at Wyoming General Hospital. Whitt had gone to the scene to contact Rowe about owed money.
The Brooklyn Dodgers dismissed Charlie Dressen as manager after a tenure that included National League titles in 1952 and 1953 and World Series losses to the Yankees in both years. The failure to reach terms for 1954 surprised observers who expected a pay raise.
