The report urges maintaining current production and wartime output while delaying a shorter workday if the emergency persists. It calls for double pay on Sundays and holidays, removal of regional pay disparities, and wage-scale talks starting March 14 with bituminous operators. Secretary of War Stimson told the House Military Committee the United States would grow to 7.5 million in 1943 with 2.2 million in air forces, 3.3 million in organized ground units, and 2 million in services and supply. He urged drafting 18 and 19 year olds and said current strength was 4.25 million, with plans to train more ground units for overseas service.
British bombers blasted the Kiel naval and U boat base in a strong, concentrated night raid. Nine planes failed to return. Beaufighters destroyed two Junkers 885 aircraft and a flying boat over the Bay of Biscay. Army cooperation planes hit a Northern France freight train. RAF pilots called the raid a good show, with four Royal Canadian squadrons and a new French unit taking part.
Soviet forces under Marshal Semeon Timoshenko pushed two new wedges into the 40 mile German shield northwest of Stalingrad and recaptured a street in the city. For the fourth day Hitler’s headquarters reported no gains, signaling Russian initiative in three sectors around the city.
New York reports two thirds of Italy's merchant fleet has been knocked out of the war. Before 1940 Mussolini's ships totaled 3,500,000 tons. UN forces have destroyed or seized 2,366,000 tons, with 1,500,000 on the destroyed list. Losses stem from air and naval attacks, fuel shortages, and sustained Allied operations in the Mediterranean, totaling 500,900 tons this year.
Frau Ilse Hess, wife of Rudolf Hess, asks to join her husband in British detention. A House of Commons notice indicates Labour MP William Thorne will question the foreign secretary Anthony Eden about the response to Frau Hess's request. The exact location of Frau Hess is not disclosed.
Rossie Fox of Penman was found not guilty of drunken driving after a jury trial in Criminal Court Judge Clay S. Crouse noted the state’s right to a trial or grand jury action. Fox had claimed a “dirty deal” in the arrest by State Trooper H. D Gibbs and argued the night’s evidence was circumstantial. The proceeding followed Fox’s request for a jury trial at his preliminary hearing.

Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, commander in chief of the Pacific fleet, said he could hold and consolidate positions in the Solomon Islands before moving ahead. He visited Guadalcanal and other bases with Vice Admiral Robert Ghormley, noted no Japanese prisoners were seen, and praised Guadalcanal troops for hard work and fighting spirit amid jungle conditions.
Raleigh county faces a hold up of more than 3000 tons of scrap iron as salvage and C and O railroad officials clash over railcar type to haul the material to Kentucky steel mills. County salvage head E J Fourney says WPB officials in Charleston and Washington will press C and C officials in Richmond to resolve the issue, with a Huntington representative due this week. The Prince Street scrap heap blocks a road to the tracks, threatening to bury them. Government interest is cited in solving the problem promptly.
The Navy reports submarines in the western Pacific sank a heavy cruiser and four other ships, possibly another, and damaged two. The tally reaches 79 sunk, 20 possibly sunk, and 24 damaged. Across the Pacific fronts, ships and bases faced heavy losses as American sea and air power mounted a six day pummeling from the Aleutians to the Solomons.
Washington reports the joint committee works toward a sweeping tax measure expected to pass by midweek. The plan raises whiskey and distilled spirits from $4 to $6 per gallon and doubles ticket taxes, with cigarette levies rising and telephone tolls climbing to 20 percent of total price. Basel reported German Italian disagreements risk Italy losing the Adriatic port Trieste. A Dagens Nyheter note said Italian permission for Myron C. Taylors Rome landing during Roosevelt envoy talks fed the rift. Biddle announced Italians in the United States would no longer be enemy aliens. Istanbul said a Hitler Mussolini meeting was planned and rumors of Germany seeking full Trieste control circulated.
Nine replacements in the list of voters registrars were announced by county clerk officials. Changes occur because many appointees left for army or defense work. New appointees will handle transfers and last minute registrations at precinct sittings this Friday and Saturday. Specific swaps include Precinct 20 Sophia Eunice Bonds for Julia Bonds and Precinct 23 Sidney Gilliam for Lola Dunbar among others. At Precinct 83 Killarney both parties’ registrars are out of town. sittings will be held by O'Dell Crook and Earl Cyphers with Aubrey White and Ira Skeens assisting.
