In Christiansburg Virginia a prominent local doctor Dr William L Flanagan 31 was killed on a rural road after a gun battle with town councilman Garland Higgins 35 who blocked a car containing Flanagan his estranged wife Alice Lou and her 5 year old daughter Higgins faced murder charges Flanagan was shot in the mouth and arm and died in hospital Higgins was wounded in the abdomen and listed in fair condition Police said Flanagan fired a .38 caliber pistol and Higgins a .22 caliber pistol in the exchange of shots.

In L Anse Michigan a 10 year old girl Lila Lynn Frosland was strangled and her father Edward Frosland 44 shot to death Sunday night. A 16 year old boyfriend of an older sister Eugene Paquette admitted both killings and described luring the girl to his car then killing her and firing on the father.
Police questioned 35 to 40 girls believed to belong to teen age clubs centered on sex. Some members admitted sexual experiences with ages ranging from 12 to 17. Officers said two of the five clubs included boys and none were linked to schools.
Alvin Wade Atwood a 48 year old coal miner and minister was killed by his 13 year old son in Mead. Police say Atwood had threatened his wife and children for two months and refused help. The son says he shot after escalating abuse and intends to stand trial in Criminal Court Tuesday.
SEAL HARBOR Maine AP Rear Adm Samuel Morison, famed for his Columbus biography, dismissed a Soviet scholar Tsypernik claim that Columbus did not discover America, noting such accusations surface every Columbus Day.
Ada Gilbert of Beckley was arrested by city police for malicious wounding at 1:45 am Sunday and jailed in county lockup before being released on bond. Eddie Lockett, also of Beckley, was shot and admitted to Beckley Hospital in poor condition. He was transported to the hospital by city officers.
Washington AP reports FTC officials testified in a possible wrapup of a congressional probe into television quiz shows. The agency’s role in preventing fraudulent advertising was outlined, while there was no word on whether Charles Van Doren would testify before the House subcommittee.
In Asbury Park New Jersey Carl Pisano dressed as Columbus fell into the Atlantic during a commemorative pageant. A Red Cross official rescued Pisano and he reached shore where he was greeted by Indians in a festive scene reflecting the discovery narrative.
Brackettville Texas AP investigators blamed a tottering romance for the killing of LeJean Ethridge 26 a Hollywood actress on a film location near Brackettville. She died with a hunting knife in her heart after a confrontation with an extra identified as Smith who claimed memory gaps in the hours around the incident. Smith held without bond on a murder charge as grand jury action pending.
Charleston AP reports Capitol Transit Co. has settled the strike of 11 bus drivers and normal service will resume tomorrow. The agreement ends a stoppage that disrupted routes and ridership.
Huntsville reports show Project Saturn limping along a 40 hour work week as Defense cuts slash funding. Maj. Gen. John B. Medaris and Wernher von Braun say the pace is insufficient to overtake the Soviets. White House and Pentagon debate transferring Saturn to NASA or the Air Force amid a nearly 48 percent funding cut.
