Royals dismiss Lemon to name McKeon as manager

Kansas City Royals owner Ewing Kauffman announced Bob Lemon was fired as manager and replaced by Jack McKeon, manager of the Omaha farm team. Lemon will finish the season with the final series against the Texas Rangers. Cedric Tallis attended the news conference with the outgoing and incoming managers.

Error Costly For Twins In Chicago Win

The Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 5-4 as Jim Geddes scored the winning run on a throwing error by catcher George Mitterwald. Pitcher Terry Forster tied the game with a two out pinch single earlier in the inning. Steve Braun singled in Rich Reese in the seventh to give Minnesota a 4-3 edge before the misplay.

Carlton Wins 27th As Phils Halt Cubs

Philadelphia routs Chicago 11 1 as Steve Carlton wins his 27th game. Don Money and Greg Luzinski hit back to back homers in the third and fifth innings. Billy Robinson adds a homer for six Phillies. Carlton limited the Cubs to eight hits with seven strikeouts in a dominant outing.

Navy and Ohio State Freshman Share National Back of the Week

Navy junior Dan Howard and Ohio State freshman Archie Griffin each earned AP National College Back of the Week honors after standout performances. Howard ran for 38 yards on 16 carries in Navy’s 27 20 win over Boston College following knee surgery, while Griffin sprinted for 239 yards on 27 carries in Ohio State’s 29 14 victory over North Carolina setting a school rushing record. Griffin’s 239 yard game came on a nine yard TD run and included a 32 yard burst. Both players impressed coaches with power and speed and timing as Griffin broke Ollie Cline’s 1945 OSU record.
