Experts Predict Economy Surge In Unemployment Decline
Washington labor experts say the first real improvement in unemployment may arrive this month. Seymour L. Wolfbein reported September unemployment fell by 457,000, while total employment declined by 1,501,000 due to youths returning to school and farm work disruptions from Hurricane Carla. The seasonally adjusted rate slid to 4.9 percent, with long-term joblessness down as well, and October could show a clearer drop. Hodges urged consumer spending to rise as business activity improves, noting August wholesale trade rose 5 percent from 1960.
