Grade Crossing Contrast On Route 16

On Route 16 between Beckley and Mullens the contrast in grade crossings between the Chesapeake and Ohio and the Virginian Railways is clear. C and O crossings ride smoother due to highway conformance and timber surface design, while the Virginian uses raised or lowered road surfaces and mostly blacktop. C and O crews note timber crossings are removable for track work, aiming for lower maintenance costs. Virginian officials acknowledge rough crossings but do not foresee major overhauls soon.
