Fayetteville residents urged to conserve water as the city fights a severe supply problem. Officials warn there is no relief predicted until fall rains, with demand outpacing capacity at the reservoir.
Blackburn Patteson Realty buys parts of Price Hill and Lee in Raleigh County and all of Derrydale in Fayette County from New River Co. for about 105000. The deal covers roughly 1000 acres and 1015 houses across Raleigh and Fayette Counties as New River continues selling mining properties to ease miners into home ownership. Fayette Homes Inc. formed to handle sales, with an initial purchase of seven communities for more than 500000, led by R E Kelly and including Claude Hill and R Snyder.
Oak Hill bride elect Geneva Lilly of Beckley will marry Frank Malont son of Mr and Mrs Nicholas Valent of Newark New Jersey on October 20 A clerical shower honored Miss Lilly at the Law apartments with refreshments for a list of Beckley and Beckley area guests and gifts from Gaye Toombs and Esther Woods.
Three Fayette county residents filed divorce suits in circuit court yesterday. Plaintiffs are Jessie M. Lawson versus George Lawson with W. H. Haynes as attorney, James Hairston versus Louise Hairston, and Willie F. Peaks versus Elizabeth Peaks with J. M. Ellis as attorney.
Delegates from Mount Hope Federated League will attend the 33rd annual Capitol District West Virginia Federation of Women’s Clubs convention at South Charleston Recreation Center. Hostess club is South Charleston Woman’s Civic. district president Mrs. Herbert C. Johnson will preside. The program centers on Youth Conservation with a youth forum, a panel on youths’ responsibilities, and talks by Dr. Donald G. McGarey and Mrs. Grady Whitman.
The Board of Public Works released 50 000 for Panther Creek State Forest and 37 500 for on farm fish ponds as part of an 1 100 000 appropriation. Other allocations include 30 000 for a swimming pool at Hawks Nest State Park and 6 000 for a bath house.
Princess Theatre in Mt Hope resumes operations after a brief closure for alterations. The reopening features include an RCA island system a Brinkert projector and a new screen according to owner and manager John W Thomas. New seating is pending arrival with installation expected by October 15.
Four Fayette county physicians earned West Virginia licenses to practice medicine. Fae H. Spurlock of Oak Hill joins Barnett Hyman and Anne Wight of Montgomery and Martin Donelson Jr. of Glen Ferris. the latter three gained licensure through reciprocity from other states. The group was part of 63 doctors statewide granted licenses.
Mount Hope Lions discuss club visits to Bessemer Pratt City Ala and Hamlin Lincoln County during meetings. Boy Scout Troop 91 sponsorship discussed and invite extended for next Tuesday at the high school. Visitors include Sidney Larrick and John Routh. Oak Hill postal clerk James C. Webster, four years of service at the Oak Hill post office, has been sworn into the U S Army after examinations at Fort Hayes Columbus Ohio. He enlisted Tuesday for 18 months of unassigned duty, local recruiter Set N J Ramsey said.
The Fire Service Extension School will start Monday at 7 p m in City Hall with Fire Chief Bernard Martin as instructor. The 30 week course includes 23 indoor sessions and seven outside demonstrations. About 20 paid and volunteer firemen are expected to attend from 7 to 9 p m.
Funeral services for Mrs C E Ashley wife of Captain Charles F Ashley will be held Saturday at 2 o clock at Beckley First Baptist Church with Rev L M Bowling and Dr Alvin J Conk in charge. Burial follows in Sunset Memorial Park. She died at her daughter’s home in Charleston Wednesday night. Surviving are Andrew Stott Florida W B Scott Charleston Mrs T S Richardson Charleston Mrs R B Tanner Charleston and Mrs C W Comphere Norfolk Va. The body will lie in state at Calfee Funeral Home until 1 p m Saturday then be taken to the church for one hour viewing.
Robert Jefferys age 25 of Whitesville was struck by a train at 2 45 Sunday morning and he is reported improving at Raleigh General Hospital. His injuries include a crushed right leg a fractured skull and brain concussion and his condition remains serious.
Miss Joan Stewart of Athens is recuperating at Memorial hospital in Princeton after an appendectomy. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Virgil E Stewart of Athens, formerly of Pineville.
Fayetteville circuit court heard more plaintiff witnesses in the Albert Humphreys case against the Virginian Railway Company. Humphreys says his legs were severed when a train struck him at the Willis Branch crossing in July 1945. Witnesses described the accident scene and Humphreys’ condition after the impact.
Charles Lucas of New Raleigh Road, a hit and run victim, regained consciousness at Beckley Hospital where he lies with serious injuries including a fractured skull and broken leg. State Police say the investigation is ongoing after his discovery on Raleigh Hill early Sunday morning.
The county court approved bonds totaling for G C McGraw deputy sheriff at 3000 with Fidelity and Casualty as surety. It also approved bonds for Theresa B Stewart notary public 400 E A Shumate as notary public 500 E G Hensley guardian bond 500 Bessie G Franklin administratrix bond 200 W R Mills administrator bond 100 and confirmed appointments including Paul Goode sheriff and a depository. It sanctioned bank depositories and approved final settlements and usual claims.
Four circles of the First Methodist church held devotional programs and meetings this week. Circle One, at Friendship Hall, heard a devotional by Mrs. Ray Welch and studied Numbers 7 8, closing with prayers and refreshments. Circle Two met at Moran Avenue with Mrs. Harry Layton presiding and Isaian 35 read under the theme The Highway of Life. Circle Three, at Matlens Hill, led by Mrs. Frank Holland, discussed evangelism and reported 12 cards sent to the sick. plans for Christmas baskets were noted. Circle Four, at Moran Avenue, studied 2 Timothy with Mrs. Gravely and read Work is Gods Gift. November plans include hosting by Mrs. Lewis Bolen.
A farewell party was held at Miss Betty Brehnan’s Kopperston home in honor of Vance Easter son of Mr and Mrs W Easter of Jesse as he enters the army. Guests included George Brooks James Bashell Boby Brahman Meri T Cooner Love'la Cooper Pat Webb and many others with games and refreshments provided. Parking details and additional names noted.
Ben Murphy a 53 year old Mount Hope resident was fined 23 dollars plus costs after pleading guilty to operating a private truck as a commercial carrier without a certificate of convenience and necessity. He was arraigned before Justice of the Peace W H Level in Oak Hill and arrested by State Trooper F E Springer and motor carrier division official Ryo Barker.
Funeral services for Jesse Willard Workman 28 of Jesse will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Jesse Baptist Church with interment in Workman Cemetery. A mine electrician he was killed Wednesday in a state fall at the Lynco mine of the Wyoming Mining Company. Born in Wyoming County he was the son of Mrs. Laura Cook Workman and the late Bessie Workman. Surviving are his wife Mary Keyser Workman five children his mother three brothers and three sisters. The body will be moved Friday afternoon from Robertson and Poglesang Funeral Home to the family home for the period prior to the service.
The Glen Rogers Ladies Missionary Society met Tuesday night in the church basement with Mrs. Agner as hostess and Mrs. Cora Cox, president. The program included a hymn, scripture by Donnie Nuckols and readings by Hazel Gentry, Snow Dillon, and Ruth York, ending with a prayer by Donnie Nuckols. Refreshments were served by the hostess and assistants to Mrs. Gay Bailey, Mrs. Cox, Mrs. Dillon, Mrs. Fay Trump, Ruth York, Ruth Thompson, Dorothy Johnson, Rulah Pressley, Marion Brooks, Verda Saxon, Ellen Wolf, Enfield Walters, and Etta Watts. President John Adams was noted in a curious aside about a quart tankard of hard cider before breakfast.

Mullens police chief J Howard Griffith will have a minor operation at Taylor Dearing hospital. He was admitted yesterday and is expected to stay five or six days. Jesse Halsey of Rockview also admitted for observation and treatment. Mrs M P Howard returned home to Pineville after two weeks with her son in Glen Rogers. Mr and Mrs W W Rose of Pineville spent Tuesday in Bluefield.
