Barter Players Deliver Fine Portrayal of Arms and the Man

Mount Hope Lions sponsor Barter Theater repertory company presented George Bernard Shaw’s Arms and the Man to a capacity local audience. Despite touring from Abingdon Virginia the eight member cast, each with years of stage experience, delivered a true portrayal set in 1885 Bulgaria amid the Serbian Bulgarian conflict. The production advances to Charleston next as part of a national tour through many cities.

The Woman's Auxiliary of St. Andrews Episcopal Church met in the parish house with Mrs. W R Givens and Mrs Hobart Watson hostesses. Rector John A Wilson led devotionals and Mrs Watson taught the Bible lesson. Mrs I E Kelly presided over business and discussed Braup's winter work. Safety Gains at Harmco Reported

A federal coal mine inspector endorsed nearly a dozen recent safety gains at the Mullens Harmco mine in Wyoming County. He urged more rock dust, safer haulage, and electrical safeguards, plus improved storage and ventilation, after inspecting 67 workers producing 250 tons daily in August.

Poolroom Owner Found Dead From Own Action in Boomer

Fayette County poolhall operator Foster M. Barnett aged 51 was found with a self inflicted gunshot wound at his Boomer establishment. A coroner's jury returned a verdict of death by own action.

Ray Scarbro Fractures Back In Pittsburgh Area

Ray Scarbro aged 20 was admitted to a hospital after an automobile accident near Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. Details were not known. In Oak Hill, Giles Akers Dempsey and Lawrence Fleshman were fined $10 and costs each by Magistrate W. H. Level for assaults on their wives.

Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands obituary note

The brief item recalls Queen Wilhelmina as the daughter of the late King Wilhelm III who ascended the throne after his death on November 23 1890. She did not reach majority until 1898 and was crowned September 6 of that year. She was the widow of Prince Henry of Mecklenburg Schwerin who died in 1934.

Power To Be Off Sunday Morning At Mullens During Installation

Power will be off for five to six hours Sunday morning beginning at 5 30 o clock while three new transformers are installed. C M Fletcher foreman for Appalachian Electric Power Company said the upgrade will raise service to Mullens and the Union Power Company from 600 to 1000 kilovolt ampere hours, enabling more customers to be served.

Presbyterian Choir Honors Member and Bride Surprise

A surprise party for Jack Stewart and his bride followed a choir rehearsal at First Presbyterian Church. Stewart is a choir member. his wife Tabitha Murphree was ill and could not attend. The group enjoyed singing and the choir gave the couple a wool blanket. refreshments were served to attendees including Mrs. Lewis Stewart and several other church members.

Boy Shot by Brother Mistaking Squirrel in Rural View

Luther John son of Rockview was treated by Dr Mervin Meek in Pineville after about 20 to 30 shotgun pellets were removed from his left side. The youth said his younger brother Hoover fired by mistake thinking him a squirrel. Johnson works at the Virginian shops in Elinore.

Arab strike aims at peaceful unity in Jerusalem scene

The Arab leadership remained confident the strike would stay peaceful and not trigger revolt, presenting it as a demonstration of unity against Western invasion.
