Ohio shoppers brace for scarce coffee as shortages spread across Columbus Cleveland and Toledo. Merchants report a 45 percent drop from a year ago and some chains ration regular customers to half a pound weekly.
A survey by the Charleston state Office of Price Administration finds Raleigh County stores split on ceiling price compliance. Fifty percent show excellent cooperation, 25 percent partial compliance, and the rest poor due to ignorance or resistance. The board aided 21 establishments with explanations and forms, expecting corrections and full compliance after guidance.
At Stalingrad the battle rages across four zones inner city southwest northwest suburbs and a 40 mile northwest Don Volga corridor. Soviet reports claim repulsed German assaults and gains on the Volga front while Nazi dispatches claim tank losses for the Soviets and a push toward Orlovka.
Bessie G. Floyd sues Beckley Hotel Co and the City of Beckley for 7000 damages after injuring herself when she stepped into an opening in a sidewalk near Neville Street. She was treated at Beckley Hospital. Additional suits include seven total following a Ghent Route 19 21 wreck that killed three and injured four, plus a separate 500 damage claim from an Edwight wreck. Three divorces and other civil actions are listed with various plaintiffs and attorneys.
Funeral services for Martha LaVonna Akers aged 36 who died yesterday at home after months of illness will be held at 9 o clock tomorrow morning at St Frances De Sales Catholic Church. Rev. Father John Halpin will officiate with burial at Sun Cemetery.
Mounting support among top-ranking war officials for manpower control legislation was reported as Congress eyed the issue. The War Manpower Commission discussed mobilizing labor to industry, agriculture, and the armed forces in executive session with Chairman Paul McNutt and other key officials.
Funeral services for Horatio Isaac Huff 64 who died at his Lester store yesterday at 5 p m of a heart attack will be conducted Sunday at 2 30 p m at the Lester Baptist Church. The Rev Jake Mullins will officiate with burial in Canaday Cemetery Glen White. Huff a Lester resident 38 years operated a mercantile business 16 years and was a member of the Lester Baptist church and Modern Lodge. Survived by wife Nickie Weeks Huff mother Elvira Howery Huff son Frank Huff daughter Mrs Joan Arthur of Leor four brothers and four sisters. Body to be moved to the Lester residence Saturday at 1 p m and stay there until funeral hour.
Wendell Willkie arrived in Chungking aboard the U S army transport Tien Shan ending a secret 4000 mile air journey via Russia and Inner Asia. About 10,000 representatives gathered to greet the American visitor in the Free China capital as Moon F Chin piloted the aircraft.
Wendell Willkie, arriving from Soviet Russia, disclosed a Japanese plane delayed him at one point during the journey. He offered little on the incident, adding that it did not occur today and quipping that danger comes more from kindness of the Chinese than enemy bullets.

Roane Waring the national commander of the American Legion is set to attend in Beckley on November 3 for a banquet at the Black Knight country club. Between 75 and 100 delegates from the New River and Winding Gulf Coalfields will leave Sunday for Cincinnati to attend the United Mine Workers convention opening October 6 for a ten day session. George J. Titler reports a special car will serve the delegates on train three, with departures from Hinton and nearby towns. Delegates will travel from Hinton Prince Thurmond Cotton Hill and Montgomery as arrangements were coordinated by D M Stamper in Huntington.
