West Virginia faces a cold stretch as colder air moves in this afternoon. Temperatures may drop to the high 20s to low 30s with rain turning to snow flurries and frequent flurries all week though no heavy snow is expected. Daytime highs may stay in the mid-40s after today with very cold nights anticipated.
Mild start gives way to windy colder trends this afternoon and tonight with snow flurries after midnight. Tuesday remains windy and cold with more flurries. Normal highs 46 25 north and 51 31 south, temperatures 5 to 7 degrees below average, rivers show muddy Greenbrier and Lake Bluestone with gates open at 7. New gauge reads 4.1 ft at Hinton.

He had threatened his wife and left a blood wrote note. The victims included Peter Gregor 39 Veronica 35 and their three sons Peter Jr 17 Ronald 15 Michael 11. The bodies were found Sunday after police responding to a call discovered the scene. Ivanov formerly lived in Brooklyn and had blamed Gregor for his commitment to the hospital. He is described as a 200 pound chronic paranoid patient who escaped on November 15.
Keystone Bardoliermere E-2, an Angus bull calf owned by former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, won first place in the Angus senior bull calf division at the 62nd International Livestock Exposition. The wins mark the first of six Eisenhower entries judged, with Herman Purdy of Pennsylvania State University guiding the calf into the ring.
A Venezuelan Avensa Convair transport with 40 passengers was hijacked between Caracas and Maracaibo. The hijackers forced the crew to fly over Caracas and release leaflets. The plane then headed toward Curacao, seeking landing permission at Curacao Airport.
Capt Julian Harvey told friend he jumped overboard after seeing blood on deck and pulled 9 year old Rene Duperrault into a boat. He reportedly left Mary Dene and Dr Arthur Du perrault, Terry Jo’s father, as the vessel sank, before later killing himself. Terry Jo Du perrault survived four days at sea.
Agriculture Department reports the six month food stamp pilot in eight states cost less than expected and ran smoothly. Early findings show good compliance and potential for expansion to low income areas if computer data confirms diet improvement from interviews with 600 families.

Concord New Hampshire UPI reports tribute from President Zialote and former Presidents Eisenhower Truman to Sen Styles Bridges who died at 63. Bridges, longtime Republican leader in the Senate, had suffered a heart attack last Sept and died of complications. His funeral plans include lying in state at the State House Hall of Flags and public services in Concord and Washington. Bridges served his fifth term since 1936 and was born in West Pembroke Maine.
Leverett Saltonstall a 69 year old senator from Boston is viewed as the likely successor to the late Styles Bridges as Senate GOP policy chairman. He heads the Republican senators conference and is seen as holding a largely honorary role while Everett Dirksen seeks reelection next year.
UPI reports a long feud between two elderly residents of Stiltner culminated in the fatal shooting of Clarence Frye, 71. Frank Ferguson, 79, walked into the Wayne County jail and told officers he had killed a man, saying he should be locked up. He was to be charged with murder for the argument turned deadly at Frye's home.
President Kennedy ends Cape Cod holiday with a broad personnel shakeup at the State Department and White House. Longtime aides and diplomats including W. Averell Harriman, George Ball, George McGhee, Walt Rostow join key posts as Chester Bowles shifts to a new high policy role.
Gov. W. W. Barron predicts an epidemic of progress in Cabell and Wayne Counties during a business and tourist development tour. He envisions new industry, expanded education, tourist attractions, and a cleaner region benefiting the state and local area.
UPI reports Freedom High School in Wisconsin sent letters to girls’ homes urging parental control over hemlines, warning knees showing may lead to more when sitting. In Italy, Fran ca Borrini 21 receives a draft notice meant for cousin Franco Borrini. Milwaukee book dealer Harry W Schwartz says the McGuffey Readers dispute has boosted his sales.
West Virginia counted six traffic deaths over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, keeping the 1961 toll at 332 compared to 335 a year earlier. Four fatalities occurred Saturday in separate crashes, including Robert Burgess 20 in Grant County and Paul Prince 35 in Fairmont.
The 102-hour Thanksgiving weekend produced 437 traffic deaths, below the 450 feared by the National Safety Council. California led with 59 deaths, followed by Texas 24, Michigan and North Carolina 23 each, and New York and Pennsylvania 20 each, as final tabulations credited to United Press International.
