A burst reservoir at a copper mine in Osarusawa Japan unleashed a torrent that drowned over 1,000 residents and destroyed 500 homes. The flood rushed from the mine area, most deaths from drowning. 18 survivors were rescued as authorities scrambled to reach the town. The mine employs about 2,000 men.
Harry A. Stansbury and Ida sold to A. Lucas of Glen Daniel lots one and two in the Deanfield addition for 10 dollars and other considerations. Floyd M. Sayre as trustee for Parker Pannell and wife traded to H. B. Powers for 30 dollars, lots 11, 12, 13 in Section eight Raleigh Court addition. Chesapeake and Ohio Railway bought 0.93 acre beginning at the main track of Winding Gulf subdivision for 1 dollar from Western Pocahontas corporation of Virginia. Mrs. Etta Brooks sold lots five and six near Coal City to Miss Effie Parker for 1 dollar. Miss Clara B. Polk received 0 dollars and other considerations from Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Lenkinhoker for surface rights to lot 41 at Sophia.
Harry L. White, 22, CCC worker from Crow, won first place among 30 entries at the Elkins Forest festival exhibit with his painting Fire on the Mountain. A Shady Spring High School graduate, he painted from memory and gifted the piece to CCC director Colonel Robert Fechner who called it the best CCC painting. Willis Gunnoe noted Camp Raleigh dominated with 11 of 15 firsts and 29 of 231 handicraft entries.
Dr. Roy M. Hoover of Roanoke Va outlined new fracture treatment techniques to about thirty Raleigh County Medical Association members and guests at a Beckley hotel dinner meeting. He emphasized managing ununited fractures and cited practices used in large eastern cities. Attending were Drs J E Robbins Glen Morrison W P Biddinger J R Jamison C C Wilson C C Cunningham and others from surrounding towns. Dr Cunningham joined the Raleigh County association.
A Beckley group of twelve officials and employees joined a Charleston long distance conference linking 230 points across the United States and Canada. The program honored the 25th anniversary of Beckley Telephone Pioneers with speakers from American Telephone and Telegraph and Bell System. Attendees included E T Stromp, Pauline Murray, Lillie Carman, C B Richards, E B Moffitt, E H Penn, T B Pugh, P D Woodruff, C S Cavendish, and others as they spoke via amplifiers to wide audiences.
The county public assistance office plans to send several boys to CCC camps after January 1. Director E. W. Worrel Jr said applicants must be junior enrollees aged 17 to 28, from families on public aid, WPA certified or in a WPA affected household, or aided by the resettlement administration. Applications close after year’s start. vacancies arise from drops or desertions since October. Enrollees will be turned to the government and sent to CCC camps, not necessarily Camp Raleigh.
Washington Democrat Senator Harrison, chairing the Senate Finance Committee, said there would be no tax increase by the next Congress and that the budget would be balanced in the fiscal year starting July 1. He endorsed the undistributed profits tax, predicted minor social security revisions, and favored limiting new federal activity while continuing essential public works with careful funding.
State police moved to a lead in a Charleston gas station robbery after a Tudor sedan stolen from a hotel garage and a caretaker who vanished were linked by a matching license 52700. Trooper B F McLaughlin said the description of the man in black matched the caretaker, who ordered five gallons of gas and fled with 41.70 at about 11 pm.
Funeral services for John Foster will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Central Street Baptist Church. He died Tuesday at McKendree state hospital where he had worked 16 years. Burial follows at Greenwood Cemetery. Survived by widow Florence Foster and five children Evelyn Turner Hester Jones Lillian May Lavana and James H Foster. two sisters Mrs. Alice Farrow and Mrs. Lila Rogers.
Baldwin Enslow, 41, leaning on a cane, pleads not guilty to the murder of his mother Mrs Juliette B Enslow 63 in Huntington. The body was found by a housekeeper beside her bed on October 17. Coroner reports incisions abrasions and contusions with possible fingernail marks on the neck. The hearing, led by Magistrate O M Phipps, included ten witnesses and was to continue.
Relief checks were mailed to clients moved from the old welfare rolls to the new public assistance office directed by E. W. Worrel Jr. Checks, about $10 monthly, were ready for distribution today in Wyoming county where the local office handled the load. Raleigh county completed the work without state aid. Some counties received state funds from a $3,000,000 equalization pool after exhausting local levies, including McDowell, Nicholas, Wayne, Tyler, Calhoun, Webster, Wirt, Mason, and Upshur with varying amounts.
A criminal court jury weighed the state charge against Alex Moore for stealing $80 in clothes from John Henry Baker. Baker testified Moore wore the clothes and Moore offered $25 to drop the case, claiming he wanted to leave jail.
A 16 year old named Fred Arnold was struck by a car on Neville street while talking with a companion. He sustained a fractured skull but was reported improving by noon. Eyewitness C A Dickinson described the impact as Arnold dashed into the street. The driver, Thelma M Donahue, a Jeffrey Manufacturing bookkeeper, was cleared of blame by Arnold’s parents.
Four H club members at a semi monthly schoolhouse meeting split into four named groups Dakotas Onedias Shawnees and Red Feathers. They performed songs stunts tap dancing dramatizations and readings with a tribe chief as announcer. Shawnees led by Georgia Williams won the contest. Elva Corder and James B Deck co sponsors organized the program.
Justice W E Middleton upheld the stork derby clause in Charles Vance Millars will. The provision pledges about 500000 dollars to the Toronto mother bearing the most children in ten years. He will hear claims of leading mothers and guide executors on distribution.
The Interstate Commerce Commission orders a six month inquiry into basic rail and waterway rates and sets January 6 for first hearings on extending the seven percent emergency surcharge in effect since April 1935. Railroads may seek to renew the levy into next year, despite objections from about 300 shippers and business groups. Agricultural products and lumber remain exempt.
Federal and state conciliators arrived in Pittsburgh to urge peace talks between the Pittsburgh Plate Glass company and the Flat Glass Workers union after a four week strike that idled about 6 000 employees. Union leader Glenn S McCabe said a letter signed by over 90 percent of workers demanded a contract employing only union members with dues check off, while a company spokesman held that action must come from the strikers who left before the contract expired. Plant closures stretch from Creighton Pennsylvania to Clarksburg West Virginia with only the Crystal plant at Crystal Missouri continuing operations and an estimated weekly wage loss of around 200 000 dollars.
Will Reed, 34, arrested as a witness in the Alex Morris larceny case, was charged with grand larceny by G O Mills, conservator of the peace. Reed claimed ignorance of the arrest, saying he was accused of stealing tools. He is jailed awaiting magisterial hearing.
Beckley Kiwanis pushed plans for the 15th anniversary of its charter to December 18 during today’s luncheon. Sophomore Marguerite Adams, daughter of Mr and Mrs A J Adams, read three pieces to the club, which were well received at the session.
Charles L Lilly faced a third refusal to be allowed to practice law in Raleigh county as about 30 attorneys gathered at the courthouse for a reconsideration vote. Disbarment followed a prior felon indictment for fraudulent sale of real estate, with Lilly appealing for reinstatement after weeks of the initial appeal.
The national assembly approves a bill extending full suffrage to Moros in Lanao Cotabato and Sulu. Moros will elect their assembly members by direct popular vote, replacing former selections by provincial presidents and municipal officials.

A carnival of fun linked to the store’s opening began yesterday at Pax High School auditorium with the play Mother and Dad's Night Out. The program features Pax and Long Branch talent and events like a nail driving contest for women. The self serve grocery system will start operating tomorrow.

George Stewart a 38 year old Eccless miner was jailed by city police on a charge of destroying property in his estranged wife's Neville street apartment Sunday afternoon. Officers said the arrest was delayed while he was treated at Peckley hospital. He allegedly sacked the rooms and fought with Clayton Mills former county jailer who was held on a $200 bond for assault and battery and to be tried in police court Friday.
Donald Simpson six year old son of Mr and Mrs Harry Simpson treated for a fractured left forearm at Raleigh General hospital after he tripped while playing. Doctors set the bones and he was released from the hospital last night.
